The build quality is very good all in metal. There is unfortunately no lens hood provided with the e-mount version although it is mentioned there is one in the user guide

The focusing ring is very large and easy to use with enough dampening and hard stops for min focusing distance and infinity. The 2 aperture rings are also very good

La qualité de construction est très bonne , tout en métal. Il n’y a malheureusement pas de pare soleil fourni, bien qu’il soit mentionné dans le mode d’emploi.

La bague de mise a point est très large, précise et agréable à utiliser, fluide mais avec suffisamment de résistance. Elle a une butée pour le minimum de mise au point et pour l’infini. Les deux bagues d’ouverture sont de très bonne facture également

Featuring an unique STF (Smooth Trans Focus) optical design. The Laowa 105mm F2 STF  incorporates an apodization (APD) element next to the aperture which resembles the function of an ND filter. It gradually reduces the amount of light transmitted towards the periphery to produce a soft, natural and beautifully diffused out-of-focus rendition. The chromatic aberration has also been controlled to the minimal.

Qu’est ce que le Smooth Trans Focus?

Le Laowa 105mm F2 est conçu avec une architecture smooth trans focus (Transition douce entre zone nettes et flou). Il comporte un filtre d’amodiation (APD) qui ressemble à un filtre ND gradué concentrique. Il réduit graduellement la quantité de lumière transmise vers la périphérie et produit un dégradé très doux et naturel vers les zones de flou d’arrière plan. Les aberrations Chromatiques sont aussi très bien contrôlées et réduites

The Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens offers two separate diaphragms.

• The stepless 14-bladed perfectly circular aperture, in conjunction with the apodization element gives this lens the ability to produce smooth and pleasing bokeh. It is also useful for videographers to control the amount of light passes through the lens. (in T – Stop)
• The 8-bladed aperture is to determine the effective aperture opening (f-number) and the depth-of-field formed. (in F Stop)

To maximise the STF effect you need to work wide open on both aperture

Le Laowa 105mm F2 Smooth Trans Focus dispose de deux diaphragmes séparés

• un diaphragme à 14 lames pour un bokeh parfaitement circulaire piloté par une bague sans clics et combinée au filtre d’amodiation permet de produire des transitions très douces vers l’arrière plan. La bague est graduée en Facteur de transmission dit T-Stop et permet au vidéaste de contrôler la quantité de lumière
• un autre diaphragme à 8 lamelles qui sert à déterminer la profondeur de champ (gradué en F stop)

Pour un effet maximum il faut travailler à pleine ouverture sur les deux diaphragmes

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

• Centre : very good at F2, excellent from F2.8 to F11, at F16 diffraction starts
• Corners : good at F2, very good at F2.8, excellent from F4 to F11, at F16 diffraction starts

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

• Centre : très bon à F2, excellent de F2.8 à F11, à F16 la diffraction commence
• Corners : bon a F2, très bon à F2.8, excellent de F4 à F11, à F16 la diffraction commence

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion

• Lens fall is present wide open but is small and disappear as of F4
• Chromatic aberrations is very low
• Distorsion is invisible
• A Lightroom lens profile is available for this lens. You will need to select it manually

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion

• Le vignettage est faible à pleine ouverture et disparait vers F4
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont très bien maîtrisées
• La distorsion est invisible
• Lightroom dispose d’un profil de correction que l’on pourra sélectionner manuellement

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

The background blur is very nice and smooth , the inner part of  bokeh balls are very soft, but still they are well defined and become ovals in the edge of the frame.

Real STF lenses like the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS or the Sony A 135mm STF produce diffuse bokeh balls as you will see in the comparison of the 2 lenses in chapter 3

Le flou d’arrière plan est très beau et doux, la partie intérieure des ronds de bokeh est également très douce, mais les ronds de bokeh sont quand meme bien définis et deviennent ovales sur les bords

Les vrais STF comme le  Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS ou le Sony A 135mm STF produisent des ronds de bokeh complètement diffus comme vous pourrez le voir dans la comparaison au chapitre 3

So Laowa is very good , but Sony is simply superb with real diffuse bokeh balls

Le Laowa est très bon , mais le Sony est juste superbe avec des ronds de bokeh complètement diffus

If we look globally , the Sony

is better for 

• autofocus , the Laowa is fully manual , the AF of the Sony is a key plus for portrait shooting , eye AF will work so a much better accuracy
• proxyphotography : the Sony has a much shorter min focusing distance of 56 cm vs 90cm allowing to do proxy photography (near macro) and to amplify the STF effect
• STF effect : the Sony is a real STF with diffuse bokeh balls

• brightness : the Sony has a lower T-stop (T5.6 instead of T3.2 for the Laowa) which requires to have much more light than the Laowa and force to increase ISO

• the price : the Sony is costing 2x the Laowa

Globalement le Sony est

meilleur pour

• l’autofocus. Le Laowa est entièrement manuel. L’AF du Sony aide beaucoup pour les portraits avec la mise au point sur l’oeil
• la proxyphotographie : Le Sony a une distance minium de mise au point beaucoup plus courte qui l’autorise à faire de la proxy photographie (presque de la macro)
• l’effet STF : C’est un réel STF avec des ronds de bokeh diffus

• le piqué

moins bon pour

• la luminosité : le Sony a une luminosité moindre (T5.6 pour T3.2 pour le Laowa) ce qui nécessite plus de lumière que le Laowa et donc une montée en ISO plus importante
• le prix : il coute le double du Laowa

5 Conclusion

The Laowa 105mm F2 T3.5 STF is a beautiful manual portrait lens

• it has a excellent sharpness and can be used wide open 
• it has a very good progressive transition to the blurry background and soft bokeh balls which is the goal of the STF effect
• the built construction is very good and there are no noticeable optical issues
• excellent brightness : F2 / T3.2 (only 1 stop lost by the apodization filter vs 2 for the Sony F2.8 / T5.6)
• price (820 euros) is quite reasonable if you compare it with the Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS (1800 euros)

Although 

• it may be complex to understand in the beginning with the double aperture rings
• the minimum focusing distance is big : 90 cm, the Sony reach 56cm
• the STF is good but far from the one achieved by Sony
• manual focusing will require your subject to stand still

In conclusion, a very good alternative to the Sony 100mm STF , but if you really like the STF effect , it will be worth to invest 2x the price to get fully diffuse background including diffuse bokeh balls and the autofocus with the eye-AF

5 Conclusion

Le Laowa 105mm F2 T3.5 STF est une très belle optique manuelle pour les portraits

• elle a un excellent piqué et est utilisable dès la pleine ouverture
• la transition vers le flou d’arrière plan est très progressive, le flou est très doux, les ronds de bokeh sont également très doux. Ce qui est le but de l’effet STF
• la qualité de construction est très bonne et il n’y a pas de défauts optiques notables
• elle a une très bonne luminosité : F2 / T3.2 (un seul diaph de perdu par le filtre d’apodisation contre 2 pour le Sony (F2.8 T5.6)
• un prix  (820 euros) très raisonnable si on le compare avec le Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS  (1800 euros)

Néanmoins

• elle peut être déroutante à utiliser avec sa double bague de diaphragme
• la distance minimum de mise au point est un peu trop grande pour des portraits serrés : 90 cm, le Sony atteint 56cm
• l’effet STF est bon, mais on est loin de la performance du Sony
• la mise au point manuelle imposera un sujet immobile

En conclusion, une bonne alternative au Sony 100mm STF , mais si vous aimer vraiment l’effet STF il vaut mieux investir le double du prix pour avoir un arrière plan complètement diffus y compris les ronds de bokeh et avoir l’autofocus avec le eye-AF
