6 Exhibitionism-East of West

East of West, 2351 Fox Road no. 600, 505-570-7708

The exhibition Before We Were Banned premiered at ArtHelix in Brooklyn earlier this year, and now the curators — Kiana Pirouz and Mahya Soltani — bring it to Santa Fe, its first destination as a traveling show. Before We Were Banned presents works by contemporary artists from the seven countries originally named in the U.S. government’s travel ban on countries with large Muslim populations: Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Eleven artists are represented, including Tandis Shoushtary, Farhad Bahram, Gina Malek, and Ifrah Mansour. The show was organized with the intention of subverting the negative, antagonistic view of Muslim nations and communities by giving the artists a platform from which to tell their own stories. The opening reception is at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 7.
