Michael Childers: Having a Ball
January 20, 2018 – May 28, 2018
Palm Springs Art Museum, Clayes III Wing
Palm Springs Art Museum proudly presents
rarely-seen portraits by Michael
Childers that explore the artistic experimentation,
social shifts, and gender
play that defined the cultural spirit of the
1970s. As evident in these vibrant portraits,
the foundation for the emergence
of a transgender rights movement can
be traced to this cultural era as captured
by Childers. As a young photographer
for Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine,
Childers’ work creates a documentary
photographic continuum for the
exhibition Andy Warhol: Prints from
the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer
and his Family Foundation. Images
of the enigmatic Warhol, members of
Warhol’s famous New York studio, The
Factory, and other avant-garde personalities
experimenting with gender and
dress animate and enliven this era—a
time before the AIDS epidemic, when
non-conforming sexuality was a gesture
of mischievous defiance rather than a
political act of survival.
In 1976 Childers photographed participants
at a Los Angeles drag ball.
Dubbed “Flaming Creatures,” this group
of thirty-eight revealing portraits captures
the amusing gender play during
an earlier, more innocent time. Through
an attention to gestures, costume, and
telling details, each of Childers’ photographs
capture both the persona and
the personalities of his subjects. Childers’
photographs of Warhol use subtle strategies
of gesture, props, and doubling
devices to go beyond the inscrutable
icon that the artist cultivated, bringing to
light his complicated personality below
the surface persona. Childers captured
The Factory’s infamous denizens in photographs
that uncover the multiple identities
at play when gender, personality,
persona, and performing roles combine.
Although more known for his images of
famous actors, writers, visual artists, and
performers, Childers brings the same
sensitivity to the drag ball’s unknown
merrymakers. Through Childers’ lens
these figures radiate a cheeky playfulness
as they experiment with makeup,
wedding dresses, tuxedos, and feather
boas to expose the artifice of traditional
gender identity and the joy of self-expression.
These images provide insight into a
history that precedes the public visibility
of lives and identities blurring traditional
gender definitions. As a participant in
both The Factory and the entertainment
culture of Los Angeles, Childers developed
a photographic language to
capture the radical potential of those
who dared to use their own bodies as
a way to reinvent our understanding of
gender. He enlarges our understanding
of the cultural revolution Warhol promoted
through photographs that inform and
delight as they remind us of the history
behind our current moment.
This exhibition is organized by Palm
Springs Art Museum from The Michael
Childers Archive and funded in part by
the Photography Collection Council.
John Thoman grew up in New Jersey where he
learned to love and appreciate art. It wasn’t
until he went to England in the fall of 2012 that
he was inspired to make his own. He went to
Liverpool to visit his mother’s grave site. He saw
the stained glass in the windows of St. Michael’s
Church in Liverpool. He was inspired with a
knowing that he would learn the art of creating
his own stained glass.
The following spring, he took lessons from Don Dietz
at the Desert Art Center for a couple of months
and is now creating his own designs and scenes.
He has been a featured artist, taped in his studio
by KESQ, CBS Local 2 News. They came to
John’s studio and included him in Eye On The
Desert. Outlaw Radio Show with Magic Matt
Alan & Producer Lori Downey, Jr. featured John
with his stained glass work commissioned for the
Radio Show.
In 2016, John taught himself to do stained glass
portraits. He has created stained glass logos
for local businesses in Palm Springs. John says
he feels very blessed to help support good
causes through his work, so he is a big giver. He
has helped raise money with his art for many
organizations, like Desert Aids Project, Desert
Arc, Wounded Warriors Project, Breast Cancer
Research, Bianca Rae Foundation, The Flower
Bank, Christopher’s Clubhouse, American
Outreach, ACT for Multiple Sclerosis, Painted
Hills Middle School, and Children’s Discovery
Museum of the Desert.
John’s pieces have sold in England, Ireland, Canada,
Mexico, and in the United States in Illinois, Texas,
Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah,
New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Louisiana,
South Carolina, Mississippi, and California. John is
a juried gallery member of the Desert Art Center.

Levvy: Where were you born?
John: Irvington, NJ
L: How did you learn that you loved stained glass art and
decide to create with it as art?
J: It was 2012 when I was visiting my mother's grave at St. Michael’s
Church, in Garston, Liverpool, England. I was putting
flowers on her grave on a nice sunny day. The church was having
church services. We went in and sat down, said a prayer,
and the glass from the windows were just gleaming onto me. I
walked up and had this feeling that I was supposed to do this
artform and make it my own. I wanted to do it my way. When
I got back to the states, I found Don Dietz at Desert Art Center,
here in Palm Springs, who taught me how to do stained glass.
L: What was your first piece and what inspired it?
J: My first piece was a butterfly. I was at a coffee shop with
Michael Maler, the owner of Espresso Cielo. I told Michael
that I wanted to do some charity and he suggested DAP and
we sold over a hundred butterflies displayed in his coffee shop.
L: You do a lot of charity work. What are some of the other
organizations that you support?
J: Christopher's Clubhouse (founder Mika Moulton), The
Flower Bank, the Bianca Rae Foundation, Desert Arc, Breast
Cancer Awareness, ACT for MS, Painted Hills Middle School
in Desert Hot Springs, Wounded Warrior Project, American
Outreach, and the Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert.
L: Where do you sell your work?
J: You can find me on Facebook, Instagram, and the Desert
Art Center in Palm Springs.
L: Tell me about the Desert Art Center?
J: The Desert Art Center is the oldest community based art
organization in the Coachella Valley. Their mission is to stimulate,
educate, and nurture the visual arts through a collaborative
effort of membership programs, art education, and gallery
space for emerging and established artists. The DAC supports
children's art education through their Middle School Art Project,
L: Do you sell and ship around the world?
J: There have been pieces sold in England, Ireland, Canada,
Mexico, Illinois, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
Utah, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina,
Mississippi as well as California.
L: Do you have a favorite piece?
J: Many. But the one I really like is Sunrise Sunset. It is an
Arizona scene with cactus plants and a purple sky.
L: What local celebrities and national celebrities have you
done a portrait and/or general art for?
J: Locally, it would be Bianca Rae, Patrick Evans, Jeff
Stahl, Brooke Beare, Fred “The Hammer” Williamson,
Panda Alfrey, Chief Bryan Reyes, Valerie Kattz, and Alexis
Hunter. Nationally, I have done portraits, logos, and artwork
for Joe Mantegna, Dr. Drew, Magic Matt Allen, Mort
Downey, Jr., Lori Downey, Jr., Ellen DeGeneres, Frank
Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr. , Elvis Presley,
Steve Harvey, actress Joanna Pettet, and Nick Chavez.
I am currently in the beginning stages of creating portraits
for the Palm Springs Police Department of our fallen officers,
fallen police dog, as well as their badge. Also in the
works will be Jon Provost along with a tribute to the Beatles,
David Bowie, and U2.
L: What plans do you have in the future for your art?
J: I want to continue to learn more about stained glass and
do more portraits for people and charities.
L: Thank you for making time for this interview, John. It
has been a delight getting to know you and your art. It is
especially cool to learn that you support so many charities
with your gift.

DESERT DENTAL
ALTERNATIVES
Bruno Lemay, DMD
acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental
plaque and it forms very quick after eating.
The better hygiene a person has, the less
they will have decay. It takes both sugar and
plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush
and floss, the more plaque removed and the
less risk of decay.
Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have
more decay. It is more obvious with elderly
patients who are loosing their dexterity, and
in general they tend to eat more sweets more
often, and not brush as often.
There is also another component that needs
to be explained here. In the mouth there are
several types of bacteria. Some are responsible
for gum disease and some are responsible
for decay. Some people may have the best
hygiene and still have gum disease and some
who have the worst hygiene may not suffer
from gum disease at all. This is because they
do not have the bacteria responsible for gum
disease. Same thing for decay. Some people
will be more susceptible to decay then others
even if they eat just a little sugar and have
decent dental hygiene. That is because they
have that kind of bacteria in their mouth in a
higher rate then another person. But that is
not a reasonable excuse. More brushing
and plaque control with a topical fluoride
application daily, preferably with a special
personal tray made at the dental office will
help.
Very rarely a person will suffer from gum
disease and a high rate of decay. It is
generally one or the other. If someone has
a high rate of decay, in general they will
not suffer from gum disease like bone loss,
periodontal pockets and tooth mobility.
It is a proven fact though, that the better
the dental hygiene you have and the better
your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake,
the healthier your gums and teeth will be.
So, it is not true that decay affect only
kids. As long as you have one tooth in your
mouth you are subject to get decay if you
leave dental plaque on it and eat sugar!
The best way to prevent that is to have
good dental hygiene at home and brushing
after any sugar intake, and to visit your
dentist 2 to 3 times a year.
Dr. Bruno Lemay
Do you think that dental cavities are
problems only for children?
It is a general belief that cavities are for kids
only. But in fact, cavities affect all ages!
The reason why cavities are more prevalent
in children is mainly the fact that they tend
to eat more sugar and have poor hygiene
habits. However, when looking at the cause
of decay, which is basically plaque with the
presence of sugar, it is easy to understand
that cavities can happen at any age even if
your mouth is full of crowns.
Of course there are some people who have
teeth that are softer then others and are
easier to decay but that affects only 1% of
the population. Basically any diet rich in
sugar will increase your chance of decay.
Soft drinks, candies and anything sweet
will have a potency to create decay in the
presence of dental plaque. Of course in
order to create decay there has to be the
bacteria that will transfer the sugar into
LYNDA CARTER
Honored with a Star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame
LIVEMAGAZINETV
WITH SABASTIAN REICH
Lynda Carter an accomplished singer and star of stage, screen, and
television. She has a career that has lasted fifty years. Lynda is just as
popular today as she was forty years ago starring in Wonder Woman,
when she became the highest paid actress on television.
At the star ceremony, Lynda dazzled the fans with a beautiful black
dress and stunning hair and makeup by her glam squad, Nevin and
Lauren Miller, who traveled from DC with her. Lynda exited a black
Escalade with family and bodyguards and made her way through
adoring screaming fans, blockaded by barricades, and made her way
to us. There we were greeted by a hug and a kiss by the super star.
Helping Emcee Elton Gubler unveil the star was Lynda’s longtime
friend from acting class, CBS powerhouse Les Moonves, whom Lynda
had met after she won 1972 Miss World USA, and friend, Patty
Jenkins, Director of the blockbuster hit, Wonder Woman. A thousand
or so fans surrounded the barricades to see their favorite star receive
her honor. Some fans traveled from Costa Rica, Argentina, and all
the states to witness this special day. Our seats were in the family and
friends reserved section for a great viewing of this special day. Among
Lynda’s special cherished friends were BFF, the beautiful, Blaine Trump,
from Miami, in a floral blazer. The Emerson family. The lovely actress
-unchanged by time, Marilu Henner, Lynda’s publicist, the fabulous
Pete Sanders, Frank Ewing, Jerry and Linda Bruckheimer and more.
Lynda exited the event to her waiting car that whisked her off high in the
hills of Cold Water Canyon to the beautiful home of Lynda’s long time
friends, the Emersons. They hosted a wonderful catered luncheon at
their stunning hilltop home with an array of sumptuous food and drinks.
The Emersons spoke of their long-time friendship with the star and her
family and what it means to have a friend as dear as Lynda Carter.
Lynda Carter received the 2,632th star on the
historic Hollywood Walk of Fame.
