Grace au magasin PCH à Bruxelles, , j’ai pu tester le Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4

1 La Famille Loxia /

Les Zeiss Loxia sont une famille d’objectifs à mise au point manuelle, elle comprend 5 objectifs en 2018, tous testé ici

• Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8
• Zeiss Loxia 25mm F2.4
• Zeiss Loxia 35mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 50mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4

Ils ont tous les caractéristiques suivantes:

• une construction tout métallique (y compris le pare soleil) de très haute qualité
• une échelle de profondeur de champ et de distance de mise au point
• une bague de sélection de l’ouverture avec la possibilité d’avoir des click (photos) ou de varier en continu sans bruit (video) – voir comment dans le chapitre suivant
• une bague de mise au point tournant sur 90°, fluide  mais avec assez de résistance pour autoriser une mise au point manuelle très précise et couplé automatiquement avec le grossissement de mise au point et le focus peaking des boitiers Sony
• Même si nous sommes en présence d’objectifs manuels , les exifs sont bien transmis au boitier grâce au contacts électroniques

1 The Loxia Family

The Zeiss Loxia are a lens family with manual focus , it contains 5 lenses as of 2018 all tested here

• Zeiss Loxia 50mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4

They share the following common specifications

• a full metal construction (including les s hood) of a very high quality
• an engraved depth of field scale and focusing distance 
• an aperture ring, that allow to either have clicks for photos or than can vary silently on a continuous basis for video (see next chapter)
• a large focusing ring rotating by 90° , fluid with some resistance that allow for precise manual focus, this coupled with the automatic zoom and focus peaking from Sony 
• Even if it a manual lens, the exif are well transmitted to the cameras via the electronic contacts 

1.2 Click (photos) / Declick videos

Pour passer du mode photos, où la bague d’ouverture varie par 1/3 IL avec un click, au mode vidéo, où la bague d’ouverture peut varier en continu sans bruit, Zeiss fournit une petite clé qui permet de faire pivoter de 180° une petite vis marquée d’un point noir sur le fut de l’objectif.

Quand les 2 points noir sont alignés on est en mode photo , quand les 2 points noirs sont opposés on est en mode vidéo.

Ce qui impose de devoir démonter l’objectif pour exécuter cette opération. Certains Sony Zeiss et GM, eux, ont en général un bouton sur le fut de l’objectif a cet effet.

To switch between the photos mode (where the aperture can vary with a click by 1/3 IL) to video (with a quiet continuously varying aperture) you need to use a small key provided by Zeiss.

You willl need to turn an adjustment screw with a black dot by 180% on the bayonet surface. When the 2 dots are close to each other your are  in photo mode (click) when the 2 dots are apposite your are in video mode.

This means that you can’t switch from one mode to the other one without unmounting the lens , which some of the Sony Zeiss and Sony GM do allow (with a switch button on the barrel of the lens)

Nous attendions un 85mm au moins F2 et beaucoup on été déçu de l’ouverture modeste de F2.4 pour ce nouveau Loxia. Une ouverture étrange plus proche de F2.8 que de F2

Ce choix est il pertinent pour un objectif essentiellement dédié au portrait ?

On comprend le choix de zeiss pour pouvoir garder une taille raisonnable pour l’objectif, mais ici le souci de consistence est poussé à l’extrême, tous les Loxia font exactement 62mm de diamètre et acceptent un filtre de 52mm. quelques mm de plus en largeur ne m’aurait pas dérangé

We were expecting a 85mm F2 , and a lot of us were disappointed by the modest F2.4 aperture of this new Loxia. A strange aperture closer to F2.8 than F2

Is this a wise choice for a portrait lens ?

I understand Zeiss choice to want to keep a reasonable size for this lens, but here the willingness to have a consistent form factor across all Loxia is pushed to the extreme : All Loxia have exactly 62mm for the barrel and 52mm for the filter size. I would not have mind to have a little bit thicker Loxia for this 85mm

Ce qui surprend également c’est la longueur du pare soleil : il est énorme , on se retrouve avec un objectif très long et fin à la fois , fort peu discret

What is also surprising is the length of the lens hood : huge ! You come up with a very long lens that is not very discrete in the street

3 Performances Photos

3.1 Piqué / Sharpness

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

Pas de test sur trépied cette fois ci , je n’ai pas eu le Loxia suffisamment longtemps à dispo

Le piqué est très très bon dès la pleine ouverture et devient excellent à F4 , il culmine vers F8/F11 avant de redescendre pour cause de diffraction à F16

Les coins / bords sont eux aussi très bon à excellent (meme si légèrement moins bon que le centre) , l’objectif fait un sans faute d’un point de vue homogénéité

The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

No tripod test this time as I could not get the lens for a very long time

The lens sharpness is already very very good at F2.4 and become excellent as from F4 , still increasing until F8, 11 , then going down due to the diffraction

Borders and corners are also very sharp even if a little bit lower than the center. A very consistent lens from center to corner

3.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / Distorsion

Le vignettage est présent mais faible à pleine ouverture mais entièrement corrigé par Lightroom

Distorsion quais nulle et pas d’aberrations chromatiques

Lens Fam off is present but small and entirely corrected by Lightroom

Distorsion and CA are quasi inexistent

3.3 Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

Un superbe Bokeh , très doux

un bel effet 3D , un très beau contraste , superbe rendu des couleurs , typique de la signature Zeiss

5 Conclusion

Dans la pratique , l’utilisation de ce Loxia est un vrai plaisir. Ses superbes performances optiques sur tout le champ dès F2.4 font que cet objectif est utilisable dès la pleine ouverture sans hésitation

Son ouverture de F2.4 permet de très beau portraits avec un fond plongé dans un flou crémeux.

Le rendu des couleur et le contraste sont superbes et portent la signature Zeiss

Sa mise au point manuelle très agréable et l’aide au grossissement + peaking apporté par les Hybrides Sony font que la mise au point est rapide et précise

Certains puristes voudront absolument une ouverture à F1.4 pour des effets de flou plus marqués mais avec une profondeur de champ très réduite extrêmement difficile à gérer en portrait rapproché. Pour des sujets plus éloignés (portrait en pied) , ou des effets créatifs, une ouverture F1.4  peut se justifier

On s’habitue vite à son énorme pare soleil et à son poids un peu plus conséquent que les autres Loxia

Pour du portrait de rue , de la vidéo, ce Loxia 85mm F2.4 est un petit bijou

5 Conclusion

In real life , the use of the Loxia 85mm F2.4 is a real pleasure. Its very good optical performances as of F2.4 across the whole frame, make that lens really usable wide open.

The F2.4 aperture allows for beautiful portraits with a creamy blurry background

The color rendition and contrast are superb, carrying the Zeiss Signature

Manual focusing with this Loxia is easy and efficient, the excellent focusing ring coupled with the Sony automatic magnification and focus peaking makes it easy, fast and efficient

Some will absolutely want an F1.4 for a 85mm to have even more blurry background which  indeed can be very usefull for distant portrait. But for close to medium distance portrait a F2.4 is already providing a quite small depth of field and good blurry background

You get used quite fast to the very long lens hood and its slightly heavier weight compared to the other Loxia

For Street photography / video , this Loxia 85mm F2.4 is a jewel
