Applications are invited for a Senior Research Associate position at the University of Portsmouth, funded by an STFC Consortium Grant to Dr. James Darling, to focus on the radiometric age dating of martian meteorites.

The project aims to test competing thermal and tectonic models for the Martian interior by placing new robust age constraints on a wide-range of martian meteorites. This will be enabled via detailed nanostructural characterization of shock-metamorphic effects in accessory minerals (e.g. SEM, EBSD), and linked U-Th-Pb isotope analysis using SIMS and novel in-situ ID-TIMS mass spectrometry techniques; in collaboration with colleagues at the NERC Isotope Geosciences Laboratory and Heidelberg University. The successful candidate will help to develop new techniques for grain extraction and 3D EBSD using Xe plasma FIB-SEM, and also have access to excellent laser ablation ICP-MS and MC-ICP-MS facilities in Portsmouth.

The Senior Research Associate will work within the Crustal Evolution Research Group under the guidance of Dr. James Darling, and in close collaboration with project partners in the UK, Canada and Germany.

Knowledge of the specific research involved is not a prerequisite, but prior experience of scanning electron microscopy and in-situ geochemical techniques are required. Knowledge of meteoritics, martian geology and/or experience in U-(Th)-Pb geochronology wound be advantageous.

A postgraduate degree in a relevant subject field (e.g. geology, planetary geology, isotope geochemistry) and relevant research experience are required. We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated candidates, who are able to work independently and have well-developed communication skills.
