Dear Families,                                                                 

I am excited to tell you about our Summer Reading Challenge! Did you know that when kids read over the summer they are likely to leap ahead when they head back to school? Research shows that even if students read 20 – 30 minutes per day, significant gains can be made throughout the summer. I would like to challenge all of the elementary students to keep reading throughout the summer months.

Summer Reading Challenge 2017

Option A - Students who choose to complete Option A will do the following:

Students will log the number of minutes they read each day.  Parents are encouraged to help students keep track of their dates and minutes. Parent signatures are required on each of the logs. Every student that reads at least 1,200 minutes will  participate in a “Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundae” party at the beginning of next school year 2017-2018. Students will need to bring their completed logs back to school by August 31st, 2017 and place them in the Reading Box in the lobby.

Option B - Students who choose to complete Option B will do the following:

Students will complete 3 rows on each of the 3 Summer Reading Challenge Bingo Boards. Parent signatures are required on all three boards. Every student that completes 3 rows on each of the 3 Bingo Boards will participate in a “Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundae” party at the beginning of next school year 2017-2018. Students will need to bring their completed logs back to school by August 31st, 2017 and place them in the Reading Box in the lobby.

What if? What if you decide to read more than 1,200 minutes or you decide to fully complete all 3 Bingo Boards? If you choose to accomplish either of those tasks, you will be entered in a raffle to win a gift card for Dairy Queen. Winners will be announced in early September.

 Note: 4th grade students who complete the Challenge will be rewarded with a “Build Your Own Ice Cream Sundae” party even though they will be Middle School Students. 4th grade students can hand in their completed Reading Challenge packets to Mrs. Reiner (5th grade Reading Teacher) or they can be dropped off or sent in with younger siblings. The same deadline applies.

~We will have extra Summer Reading Challenge packets in the Elementary School Office.
