Demänovská Ice Cave & Pribylina guided tour

Demänovská Ice Cave and Pribylina open air museum

Demänovská Ice Cave is located about 40 km from the High Tatras.

Few facts about the cave:

  • The path in the cave is 650 m long with vertical span of 48 m
  • The entrance and exit are at the same elevation, only 40 m away from each other
  • Walk inside the cave lasts about 45 min
  • The temperature during summer months fluctuates between +0,4°C and +3°C

The path goes through mighty river passages interconnected by steep sections. The first part of the tour leads through cave spaces with flowstone decoration and the second one is in the iced parts of the cave.

The combination of flowstone and ice decoration offers a very interesting tour for visitors, where they can learn about forming cave spaces, cave decoration and conditions for glaciation and also about the influence of ice on original calcite fill.

The cave spaces consist of oval river modelled passages and domes reshaped by collapses and frost weathering.

Once the trip to cave is finished we will take you to the open air museum called Pribylina.

Museum of Liptov Village is the most attractive landmark of the Liptov region.

It offers the display of typical folk architecture. The impetus behind the establishment of the museum was the extensive flooding caused by the construction of Liptovská Mara dam.

The most important cultural monuments were moved from eleven flooded communities. They have become the main exhibits of the museum.

All of the original buildings were dismantled and moved to the museum, which was opened to public in 1991. It is the most recently opened out-door museum in Slovakia.

Precious samples of sacral and secular folk architecture are the Gothic-Renaissance Manor House of Parížovce and an Early-Gothic Church of Virgin Mary from Liptovská Mara.

The Manor House is a fine example of some of the oldest landowners’ architecture of the Liptov region and various architectural details including the Late-Gothic wall paintings will certainly attract the attention of the tourist.

The church itself is much older, its foundations were constructed in the Romanesque style and laid down approximately in the 12th century. It was rebuilt in the second half of the 13th century, later expanded, and in the 17th century its tower was built .

The village school comprising also the teacher’s apartment of Valaská Dubová and exhibition of old beehives in the orchard next to the local school will also intrigue the visitor.
