The build construction is good, made of high quality plastic

There is an aperture ring with click, a depth of field scale and a rubbered focus ring, that can be operated smoothly

A video version named ” T1.5 Cine” exists, with clickless aperture,  and rings design compatible with follow focus

La qualité de construction est bonne avec des plastiques de haute qualité

L’objectif est équipé d’une bague d’ouverture avec clic et d’une bague de mise au point caoutchoutée assez agréable à l’usage

Une version video de cet objectif existe, prénommé “T1.5 Cine” elle est équipée d’une bague d’ouverture fluide (sans clics) pour la vidéo. Les bagues sont crantées pour permettre d’être couplé avec des mécanismes de follow focus

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

• Centre : At F1.4 it is average with some softness, it become good at F2 and very good at F2.8 and excellent as of F4 up to F8 , then very good at 11, at F16 we start to see diffration
• Corners : follow the same pattern being a little bit less good than the centre (1 grade) but are reaching the very good level

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

• Centre: A F1.4 moyen , un peu mou, , il devient bon à F2 , très bon a F2.8 et Excellent à F4 jusque F8, à F11 très bon, puis la diffraction fait son apparition  à F16
• Coins : l’objectif suit le même comportement tout en étant environ un grade moins bon que le centre. On atteint quand même le grade très bon

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion

• Vignetting is visible from F1.4 to F2.8
• Distorsion is also visible but fortunately there is a Lightroom Lens profile to correct it (to be selected manually as no exif to auto select it)
• Chromatic aberrations are quite low
• The flare distance is average

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion

• Le vignettage est visible entre F1.4 et F2.8
• La distorsion est visible mais peut se corriger grâce à un profil Lightroom pour cet objectif qu’il faudra toutefois sélectionner manuellement
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles
• La résistance au flare est moyenne

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The background is very pleasant very creamy, but colors are a little bit muted
• Bokeh is OK but the bokeh balls have some kind of disturbing halos
• Le flou d’arrière plan est très agréable mais les couleurs sont un peu ternes
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont correct mais il y a comme un effet de halo parfois

Nice rendering in video with smooth background blur but colors are a bit faded

5 Conclusion

The Samyang 50mm F1.4 AS UMC has good optical performances , sharpness is very good if you close down a little bit, the background blur is quite pleasing , colors are however a little bit muted

Price is ok at 400 euros for a F1.4 , but the lens is fully manual and very bulky as initially designed for DSLR

At 250 euros I prefer the entry level Sony FE 50mm F1.8, which is much more compact , add AF and whose sharpness results are good even if a tad lower than this Samyang (that reach very good level)

If you are ready to pay up to 600 euros I would recommend the AF version of the Samyang : Samyang 50 mm F1.4 AF (aka Rokinon), 

All depends with which model of camera you will use it : with a A7 or A7II , you may want pick one of the 3 above mentioned lenses

If you have invested in an A9, A7RII or A7RIII then you should look at the Sony Planar T* 50mm F1.4 Zeiss (1500 euros) or the Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55 mm F1.8 (900 euros)

5 Conclusion

Le Samyang 50mm F1.4 AS UMC a de bonnes performances optiques. Le piqué est très bon si l’on ferme un petit peu. Le flou d’arrière plan est assez plaisant même si les couleurs sont un peu ternes

Le prix de 400 euros est raisonnable pour un F1.4 , mais l’objectif est entièrement manuel et très encombrant car prévu au départ pour des reflex

A 250 euros, je lui préfère l’entrée de gamme Sony FE 50mm F1.8, qui est beaucoup plus compact , dispose d’un AF and dont le piqué est bon même si moins élevé que ce Samyang (qui atteint le grade très bon)

Si vous êtes prêt à investir jusqu’à 600 euros je vous recommande la version AF du Samyang :  Samyang 50 mm F1.4 AF 

Tout dépend avec quel boitier vous allez l’utilisez. Pour un A7 ou A7II , vous pouvez prendre parmi les 3 objectifs cités

Si vous avez investi dans un A9, A7RII ou un A7RIII , alors vous devriez regardez à prendre un Sony Planar T* 50mm F1.4 Zeiss (1500 euros) ou le Sony Zeiss Sonnar T* FE 55 mm F1.8 (900 euros)
