Cleanup thread: Magnificent Bastard

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

     Previous post
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

  • Why do a cleanup?: This trope definitely exists and has a well documented history of use. That being said, it frequently gets misused to a character who meets one of the components, namely that they are smart, charming while not necessarily even being a villain, or create good plans. While these are components, there is also a certain personality required, not to mention that all of the above are required to be present for a character to be a true Magnificent Bastard. As the trope attracts interest, it unfortunately brings in a lot of misuse and I thought the best way to rectify this would be a Perpetual Cleanup Thread, as is being done and has seen success with Complete Monster.

  • What makes a Magnificent Bastard: Below is a list of the individual components to make this character. Note that they must all be present, not just some, which has lead to frequent misuse:
    • Must be intelligent: Goes without saying, to be a Magnificent Bastard, the character has to be smart in the first place and use their brain to work towards whatever their end goal may be;
    • Must be a Bastard: While going overboard in how vile the character is can be detrimental, a key aspect is the Bastard part of the trope, whether the character is an out-and-out antagonist in the work, some manner of Villain Protagonist, or something in between, they at least have some unscrupulous qualities to qualify for this trope;
    • Must not be too detestable: Again, there is a ceiling on how bad the character can be before they just become too nefarious, blocking out the Magnificent part of the trope. A genocidal racist or child-raping Sadist aren't going to make the cut;
    • Think on their feet: In addition to being a Chessmaster, a Magnificent Bastard, if the character deals with situations in which their initial plan is ruined, has to be able to pull a Xanatos Speed Chess and at least come up with a competent strategy to make up for lost time, otherwise they fail for being unable to think in tough spots;
    • Have charm: Even if they don't necessarily make every character they meet fall in love with them and can even be detested by others, the audience has to find an amicable social relation to the character, or they are failing to make the impact required for this trope.

  • What to do if a character is listed on a page but has not been approved?: They need to be removed, all candidates need to come through the cleanup thread first. The character could well count but they need to be analyzed properly and voted on first.

  • Do we list Playing With this trope?: No; as a YMMV trope, this cannot be Played With, so we only want examples that are Played Straight.

  • What do I do if I want a character to be listed as a Magnificent Bastard?: The greatest success Complete Monster saw for its cleanup effort was from the invention of the effort post format, so, borrowing from that, a troper wishing to propose a Magnificent Bastard will create such a post in the following format:
    • Begin by describing The work, this will help establish the setting the character is in and for the reader to understand what kind of a scenario they are in;
    • Summarize The character's actions, this will provide a listing for readers to understand what they do and how it applies to this trope because charm and lack of smugness are so crucial, this is a good time to be incorporating exactly the flavor of how they operate to explain this;
    • List circumstances in which the character must Think on their feet, these are times where a wrench might be thrown in their initial plan and they have to adapt on the spot or even come up with a new scheme all together, this is also a good time to explain how the villain reacts to defeat when they have to face it, a true Magnificent Bastard won't break down into tears at the thought of death, they should have known such a possibility could occur and be able to handle it with more dignity;
    • The competition, similar to the Heinous Standard dealt with for a Complete Monster, this section is to deal with how successful the character is in carrying out their plans compared to other characters. While, as a villain, they probably are going to lose in the end, it is good to explain how other characters handle the same situation. There is no exceptionalism case to be made for this trope but explaining the variety helps the reader have a better understanding of the proposal.

  • How do you know when the character's arc is done so they can be proposed? When their tenure as a villain or antagonist finishes. This could happen in a single Story Arc in an entire work, a single work of a franchise, or the whole series in general. We'll show lenience to Long-Runners with constantly recurring candidates or series with outstanding continuities (ex. comic books), and it's entirely possible to count in a work or two but not in general for a reason like Depending on the Writer.

  • What about candidates evil because of external sources? Those Made of Evil can qualify if they show enough individuality and tactical acumen — in other words, they have the personality to fulfill the magnificence requirement. Conversely, those brainwashed, especially if they're a better person without it, may fail the individuality aspect and cannot count.

  • What if they are under orders from a higher-up? Depends. If the boss created the plans down to the letter and the candidate is just following them, sounds like we should discuss the boss instead. However, if the candidate takes creative liberties with the orders, adds their own charm and flair to them, fills in holes in the orders, and/or actively deals with obstacles their boss did not talk about, the candidate shows enough individual thinking to qualify.

  • What about Character Development? An MB is something a character can develop into... a nice person who plots well might become more morally gray as the work goes on and hits the "Bastard" criteria, thus making them viable. Likewise, a Smug Snake might shed their ego, become more understanding of the threat others pose and gain the personality or "Magnificent" criteria, likewise making them viable. Conversely, a character who looks like this trope might suffer from a Sanity Slippage or just get outed as not being as smart as they thought they were and become incompatible with MB.

  • Can an MB be a good guy? Not in the conventional sense... it is required they have at least some dubious traits lest they fail the "Bastard" criteria. That being said, a character who pulls a Heel–Face Turn or eventually stops taking villainous actions is still fair game: as there was a point in time where they were both "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and they've merely adapted as time goes on. Now... if such a character begins showing other issues (i.e.: becomes prone to freak outs or starts getting outwitted) then they're compromising their Magnificence and will probably be deemed a cut. What's important is stylishly operating while at least for some time being willing to take at best underhanded methods to see a job done. A Heel–Face Turn in itself isn't a disqualifier but they do have to have been "Magnificent" and a "Bastard" at the same time and afterwards can't start slipping on the former front.

  • What about characters whose stories can take different routes?: When proposing a character in a form of media that has them in multiple story routes. Said character must be consistent with their characteristics in all routes. (ex.: Can't have an example who shows promise on one route yet fails in another.) The only exception is if a later installment of the series confirms the character's actions which made them worth proposing are the canon route.

  • Is there a timeframe rule like with Complete Monster?: Yes, please wait two weeks until after the work has concluded before proposing a character (again, usually using the North American air date). As is the case with CM, we want to give a reasonable time frame so that everyone interested in seeing the work has done so and can participate in the discussion without having anything spoiled.

  • What about groups like with Complete Monster?: This is a point of divergence between the two tropes. While CM does not allow for a single entry encompassing more than three characters lest their heinousness for crimes becomes too watered down, with MB as long as they are treated as one "unit" it is acceptable to lump all characters provided they share acts of charm and intelligence.

  • Can I propose my own work's character as a Magnificent Bastard?: No, this is a YMMV subject and the creator of a content is way too biased to be able to evaluate the criteria we're looking for without a second opinion taking over. That being said, you are more than welcome to encourage someone to consume your creation and if they feel a character counts, are more than welcome to suggest them.

Thread rules

When voting a troper must specify the effort post they're voting on and cannot merely vote on "Everything I missed" as in the past it has indicated the poster didn't read the effort post and is guessing instead of analyzing.

Resolved items

In general, a character listed on this trope is considered "settled". This means they should not be challenged unless information used to list them was incorrect or information was missed in the initial discussion.

However, when re-litigating a candidate, the same rules apply for when they were originally proposed. If they do not have five or more upvotes than downvotes for approval upon a re-litigation, including votes from the initial discussion if they do not change, then they are a cut.

This especially applies to the characters listed below, who have been discussed excessively and repeated attempts to get them listed/cut may result in punitive action for bogging down the thread.

Definitely an MB

Definitely not an MB

  • South Park: The show's frequent use of vulgar comedy and mean-spirited humor leaves any potential candidates devoid of the dignity or charm to qualify.

Eredin is a genocidal racist sadist who violated the only taboos the Aen Elle even have and believes everything that isn't an Aen Elle should be slaughtered or worked to death as a slave.

Yeah, I'm slightly more likely to be lenient on Fantastic Racism if it's something like Ares pointing out that Gods are more powerful than humans to Diana... it's just a fact but Eredin's prejudice is like Voldemort's: he doesn't care if there's an actual difference, he's a parallel to a real world racist or sexist or anti-LGBT who roots his belief in disgusting and ultimately nonsensical prejudice. Even if he didn't have such a Master Race viewpoint yeah, he's a mass murderer and slaver, no dice.

Since it looks like both of my proposals from Mistborn: The Original Trilogy got enough votes, here are some write-ups:

  • Mistborn: The Original Trilogy:
    • The Lord Ruler is the godlike emperor of the Final Empire who rose from humble origins to become a tyrant who united the known world under his rule and reshaped it in his image. Despite centuries spent struggling with Ruin's influence on his thoughts, he remained determined to ensure the survival of humanity by any means necessary and set numerous contingency plans in motion; even following the Lord Ruler's death his hand continued to work behind the scenes and would play a key role in Ruin's final defeat, and even centuries down the line his influence on Scadrial's history can't be entirely escaped.
    • Kelsier was little more than an arrogant master thief until he and his wife were sentenced to the dreaded Pits of Hathsin by the Lord Ruler. Escaping, he proceeded to hijack the rebellion as his private army and carefully spread his reputation as a quasi-religious figure across the empire, so that when he was killed his martyrdom would trigger a mass uprising that would topple the Lord Ruler - and The Secret History describes how even death couldn't keep him down for good as he continued his scheming as a cognitive shadow. Charismatic, brilliant, and more than a little mad, the Survivor of Hathsin would topple a thousand-year empire through sheer force of will and cunning and create a reputation for himself as an iconic figure that would endure for centuries.

Okay since its two weeks since the 2nd season of Luke Cage (2016) aired does anyone have an opinion about Hernan "Shades" Alvarez? This is his current MB entry I found in the YMMV page:

Magnificent Bastard: Shades, with his charisma and ability to remain in a position of power even as leadership changes. He's considered by many fans of the show, and Theo Rossi, to be like a Harlem variant of Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish.

OE will writeup Darkseid soon he told me.

Alright, so I have an EP now...that's kind of two in one.

Valiant Comics were a comic line create din the 90s by Jim Shooter focusing on plot and character above all else. The result was a goddamn terrific comics line with varied titles and excellent writing until...bad things happened with the company. Vsaliant went under until a few years ago when the company was resurrected with many titles rebooted.

One such title is Harbinger...Harbinger is like the answer to X-men and the same character is my proposal in both original continuity and reboot. Our hero is Peter, who discovers he's what's known as a Harbinger, a being with special powers. He's approached by a man who runs a school for gifted youngsters as himself who will teach him how to use those powers, to refine them, to protect the world.

....Except in a twist? This man's the bad guy. Enter...Toyo Harada.

Who is Toyo Harada?

Now, I'll say when details diverge, but in both continuities, Toyo Harada is the most powerful Harbinger alive. An 'Omega' with only hero Peter Stanchek managing to equal him for raw power.

Now, in the original continuity, Harada was born to Japanese immigrants in Oakland. His parents were terrified of him for his powers, and when he believed they were going to kill him, he murdered them first. He began to glean all the informaiton and learning he needed from the minds of experts, becoming a genuine prodigy and building a fortune and empire. Little by little, the young genius became dissatisfied with the world and decided he had to save it from itself.

In the reboot continuity, Harada's backstory is a truly tragic one. His powers awakened at the worst time. He lived in Japan with his beloved parents, waiting for his father to return from WW 2. In Hiroshima. In 1945. The bomb fell. And his powers awoke to save him. But Harada saw the nuclear devastation and he despaired...and he decided the world had to be forced to change. Like his original self, Harada is a man who wants to save the world and humanity from themselves...with no price too great.

In both continuities, he establishes the Harbinger foundation to study people like him, but uses it as a front to recruit other Harbingers to his cause, relying on his charisma and skill to convince them of his righteousness. However, he's not above manipulation and less savory means. In the reboot continuity, Harada eliminates a friend of Peter's by having his men give the young man an overdose to look like a suicide to kill Peter's attachments to the outside world.

Now, Peter, in both continuities, discovers Harada's true nature and flees with other Harbingers who oppose Harada's ruthless plans for the world.. In both continuities, though? Harada is a fucking genius who's one step ahead. He manipulates the media, governments and other heroes to get what he wants, constantly remaining one step ahead of the so-called Harbinger Rebellion...backing up his will are an elite unit of loyal Harbingers known as the Eggbreakers (Can't make an omelette, etc.) In the original continuity? Harada is even aware of alien invaders for years and takes clandestine steps to screw them over so they don't even know he's behind it.

Now, in the original comics, Harada eventually faces off with Aric of Dacia, the hero with superpowered alien armor and the two mortally wound each other. Harada manages to bodyjack his secretary and pretty much takes over the world until a final battle with Peter that destroys him. In the remake, it turns out...Harada takes over the world by careful planning, charisma and intellect. However, as he grows too old, he fears his powers will rage out of control and damage the world, so he ops to leave the planet and die in peace elsewhere. He calls his old enemy Peter ina nd announces he's making Peter his successor because despite their differences, he knows Peter loves the world as much as he does. Peter tells Harada that Harada must know he's going to start Democratic elections as soon as Harada is gone. Harada just sighs and says "Fine, Peter. Just make sure you win them" before departing.

Is he charming? Charismatic? Manipulative?

Harada is EVERYTHING above. He is utterly manipulative, constantly playing public opinion and the Harbingers under him and against him. He is utterly charming and given how Affably Evil he is, very little of it is even fake. He's nothing but charismatic, able to command loyalty and attention all at once. He is a man of drive and vision, and no matter how harsh or cruel his goals are, he has nothing but conviction in them. Harada is an easy pass here in either continuity.

Is he a bastard? Too much?

There's no other word for him in either. Harada is a remorseless manipulator, a murderer and a conqueror. He would be a tyrant, believing only he can guide the future of humanity. He's killed a lot of people, and he'll manipulate wars and destruction to get what he wants. He's capable of some great evils, no doubt.

But in both continuities, his good intentions are genuine...and there are times when he kills people, but genuinely feels bad about doing so and offers a heartfelt apology before he does. In he original continuity, he's seen countless horrible atrocities enacted in the world and feels he must fix it. In the reboot, he's a survivor of fucking Hiroshima who was traumatized by it, and while the original Harada despised his parents when he killed them, reboot Harada deeply loves his parents and when he's given a vision of his heart's deepest desire? He's child again in Hiroshima, with his father returning to him and his mother.

He's a man who loses his humanity to save humanity and in the reboot, he takes over the world and forces a utopia out of it much like Lex Luthor, and rather than harm it with his natural lifespan ending, he entrusts the future to Peter, because despite their bitter enmity, he knows Peter loves the world as much as Harada does and trusts him to safeguard the future.

Conclusion?

An amazing villain in both continuities and an easy freaking keep. Amazing character with incredible depth, even if he is an evil SOB oftentimes.

One other for right now?

What's the work?

Vikings is a show consisting of...the golden age of Vikings, under the leadership of the brilliant, ruthless would-be king Ragnard Sigurdson, also known as Ragnar Lothbrok.. The series follows Ragnar from his rise to his eventual death...and our MB is none other than Ragnar.

Who is Ragnar Lothbrok?

Ragnar is the eldest of the sons of Sigurd (whose ancestor is rumored to be Odin himself) in the Norwegian settlement of Kattegat. A brilliant raider, warrior and leader,Ragnar is at odds with Earl Haraldson, the paranoid, conservative leader of the settlement, and desires to expand further. Ragnar eventually begins leading raids west, learning more of the lands of the saxons and other people's, taking a priest named Athelstan captive as a slave, and treats him as a friend and a member of his household. Ragnar at this point has a wife, the shield maiden Lagertha, and two kids...we see Ragnar prove himself a tactical genius on the raids, easily dismantling his enemies and taking back spoils and plunder. However, Lagertha on a raid gets into a fight with one of Haraldson's men when she sees to prevent a rape, killing the man. Ragnar seeks to take the blame, but things go wrong and he and Haraldson come to a head. Not done, though, Ragnar shores up his support in Kattegat and begins pressing Haraldson, manipulating things so Haraldson is forced to face him in single combat. Ragnar wins and sends Haraldson to Valhalla, becoming Earl himself.

Ragnar continues facing threats on a grander scale, coming into conflict with enemies like King Horik of Denmark and Jarl Borg of the region...Ragnar's brother Rollo briefly betrays him, but Ragnar has him reconcile with him. Season 2 consists of Ragnar seemingly on the ropes...but when Jarl Borg seemingly tries to ally with him again, Ragnar tricks him and destroys him, executing Borg himself by drawing a Blood Eagle on his back, and plays Horik like a goddamn fiddle...letting Horik believe Ragnar's friend Floki is betraying him with others when they're on Ragnar's side and lure Horik into a trap. Ragnar slaughters Horik's family and proceeds to personally kill Horik as Horik was going to kill Ragnar's children...at this point, Ragnar and Lagertha have divorced something fierce and Ragnar is with another woman who's given him multiple sons.

Ragnar ascends to become a king now, expanding his raiding and setting his sights on Paris. Athelstan, Ragnr's dearest friend is murdered by Floki and Ragnar...becomes a noticeably darker man without Athelstan's kinder influence. The siege of Paris goes bad and Ragnar is seemingly injured. Dying, he requests that he be baptized and buried in the city. His body is delivered in a coffin....only for Ragnr to reveal a "surprise, motherfuckers" and is actually alive. He jumps out of the coffin, takes the princess hostage and forces them to open the city to the Vikings. Victorious, they sail for home after, but Rollo ends up staying behind to join the Franks.

things go wrong due to rollo's betrayal and Ragnar vanishes for ten years. Now, seemingly broken and with nothing to live for...Ragnar pulls his true masterstroke. Leading a supposed raid on England, Ragnar allows himself to be captured by his old enemy, King Ecbert who treats him as a friendly enemy. Ragnar plays along, knowing he's to be handed to King Aelle, the Saxon. Ragnar promises no revenge on Ecbert should Ecbert release his sons...but promptly whispers to his son Ivarr to take revenge On Ecbert as well as Aelle. Given to Aelle, the older, broken Ragnar...goes out a true viking, proclaiming his faith in Odin and declares he will see his friends and kin once again in Valhalla....and knows his death will reignite a new Viking age as his sons take their revenge. Ragnar is thrown into a snake pit, dying with a grim smile on his face, setting everything in motion with his death as his sons sweep in later and annihilate Aelle and Ecbert's forces, with Aelle himself blood-eagled in retribution...and a new age of vikings has begun.

Is he charming? Charismatic? Manipulative?

More than any viking should be. Ragnar is soft-spoken, seemingly gentle, but intensely charismatic, able to win friends and allies. His charm is unbelievable and he's an easy-going man who wins loyalty like nobody's business to the point the paranoid Haraldson sees him as a true threat. And manipulative? ragnar will lead you to your death and you'll never even see it coming. He plays everyone in series, turning entire armies and battles into pieces on a chessboard you never see coming.

Is he a bastard? Too much?

Ragnar is...yes, yes he is. When he first defeats a Saxon force, he takes one hostage and gets info from the man before asking if he wants to live. Ragnar's response? "Hehehe. No." and has him executed. He's fully willing to use and murder people. He betrays Jarl Borg and gives hima horrific death, taunting him about his impending blood eagle which is a godawful way to die...in fact, Borg enduring it without screaming is so brave it's said to send him right to Valhalla. He cheats on and divorces Lagertha, he murders lots of people, and he kills his lover, a Chinese former slave named Yidu when she tries to blackmail him. Ragnar is not a very nice person, to put it mildly.

That said, he loves his family deeply. His kids are everything to him and he maintains an affection for Lagertha and his second wife Aslaug. He cares for his men, and he loved his brother Rollo whose betrayal enrages him and cuts him deeply. He loved Athelstan (even if he tried to manipulate him into being a sacrifice at one point as not to lose any of his own soldiers), and when Athelstan dies Ragnar genuinely mourns him, saying he doesn't think Athelstan's god will ever let Ragnar visit him in heaven. He's a very complex man and a bad person, but he has some amazing good points.

Conclusion?

Oh hell yes on Ragnar Lothbrok.
