A Conversation With: Keisha L. Gibson MD, MPH
Dr. Keisha Gibson received a BS Degree in Molecular Biology from Winston-Salem State University in 1997 and in 2002 received her MD degree from the University of NC at Chapel Hill. She then completed training for General Pediatrics at the Medical University of SC in 2005 before returning to UNC Chapel Hill to complete subspecialty training in Pediatric Nephrology and a MPH in Epidemiology in 2008. Since then, Dr. Gibson has worked as a full-time faculty member in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at UNC Chapel Hill. While her clinical focus is on the care of children, adolescents, and young adults with kidney disease, Dr. Gibson is a co-investigator on several multicenter research studies surrounding glomerular diseases such as Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis and lupus nephritis, diseases that disproportionately cause kidney failure in minority populations. She recently co-led an international group of investigators to restructure clinical guidelines surrounding these diseases. Dr. Gibson served as the UNC Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program Director from 2011-2020 and is currently the Chief of Pediatric Nephrology and the Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine. On a national level, she is the current Secretary-Treasurer for the American Society of Nephrology and is helping to lead efforts with the Society of Pediatric Research to improve to improve diversity and inclusiveness in pediatric and nephrology research. On a community level she remains dedicated to supporting community pipeline programs that expose youth to careers in math and science.
