Handling

The build quality is very good with the lens fully in metal

Very near the front lens there is a classical aperture ring

What is unusual is that there is no focusing ring ! there is only a magnification ring that allow to go from 2.5 X to 5X magnification but the working distance is fixed from 40mm in 5x mode to 45mm in 2.5 mode

You will need to use a macro rail to be able to do your focus

Maniement

La qualité de construction est très bonne avec un objectif tout en métal

Vous trouverez une bague d’ouverture près de la lentille frontale

Le plus surprenant : pas de bague de mise au point , mais bien un bague de grossissement de 2.5 x à 5X la distance de mise au point elle est fixe et de 40mm en position 5X à 45mm en position 2.5X

Macro rail

Tripod collar : There is an optional tripod collar , but I did not find it very useful on a A7RIII, maybe on a smaller camera like a A6000 it can be useful

Collier de pied : Il y a un support optionnel, mais je ne l’ai pas trouvé très utile sur A7RIII, peut être pourra t il être utile sur un boitier plus petit comme un A6000

2 Using the lens

2.1 Optical performance

The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

Considering it is more a microscope than standard lens , standard tests are useless

We won’t test CA, distorsion, Bokeh or sharpness but will look on how to use the lens and what are typical results you can obtain

Les tests ont été effectués sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme sony avec ses 42MPix

Comme cet objectif s’apparent plus à un microscope qu’à un objectif classique les tests habituels de piqué, AC, distorsion, bokeh ont peu d’utilité et je me concentrerais plus sur l’utilisation pratique d’un tel objectif

2.2 For which usage / pour quel usage

The Laowa 25mm F2.8 2.5x – 5X is an extreme macro lens for very specific usage 

It is the equivalent of the Canon MP-E65mm F2.8 macro 1-5x

If you look for less extreme macro lens there is the Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra-Macro, that can achieve a magnification of 2x

With a magnification of 2.5X minimum don’t expect to take moving insects. This lens is for details of small objects or death insects

Le Laowa 25mm f2.8 2.5-5X est une optique macro extrême pour des usages très spécifiques. C’est l’équivalent du Canon MP-E65mm F2.8 macro 1-5x

Si vous cherchez une optique macro un peu moins extrême , il y a le  Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2:1 Ultra-Macro, qui atteint déjà un facteur de grossissement de X2

Ici avec un grossissement de minimum 2.5X , n’espérez pas prendre des insectes en mouvement, il faudra se contenter d’objets et d’insecte morts

2.3 Depth of field / Profondeur de champ

The depth of field is extremely minimal varying from 0.05mm to 0.5mm maximum!

So it will be almost mandatory to do focus stacking. This technique consist in taking multiple photos and combining them to increase the depth of field.

You will need to take a first photo of the closest point and take move forward by little increment (eg 0.1mm) until you reach the most distant point you want to be sharp

Stacking and merging of the photos will happen in photoshop

Considering the high magnification ratio , your subject really need to be parallel to the lens which is not obvious to setup

La profondeur de champ est extrêmement réduite et varie entre .05mm et 0.5mm maximum!

Donc il sera obligatoire d’utiliser la technique de focus stacking avec cet objectif. Celle ci consiste à prendre une grande série de photos et à les fusionner pour accroitre la profondeur de champ

Pour ce faire il faudra prendre la 1ere photo sur le point le plu porche puis décaler l’ensemble vers l’avant d’un rien (.1mm) et recommencer jusqu’à atteindre le dernier plan qui devra être net

La fusion des photos s’effectuera en photoshop

Vu le fort taux de grossissement il faudra essayer d’avoir votre sujet bien parallèle par rapport à l’objectif ce qui est loin d’être évident

2.3 How to use this lens ?/ Comment l’utiliser ?

4 mandatory accessories for this lens 

• Tripod + Micrometric ball head: on top of being impossible to manipulate handheld, any little vibration will blur your image and change the focus, so better take a steady tripod + a micrometrical ball head like the manfrotto 410 allowing you to adjust all 3 movements with precision
• Wired Remote : Pushing the shutter will induce vibration, you can always use a 5-10 sec delay shutter but if you need to take 50 photos to perform some focus stacking you better take a wired remote
• Macro rail : to be able to adjust the focus distance without moving the tripod and to do some focus staking you better use a macro rail like the below ones, for specialist you could invest in an electric macro rail 
  • manual one like the Novoflex CASTEL-L
  • automatic ones like the Stackshoot Automated macro rail package
• Assist Lamp : you will need a lot of light when working so close with small aperture: Laowa is selling a specific Assist lamp that could be very useful

4 accessoires sont essentiels pour l’utilisation de cet objectif

• Un trépied et une rotule micrométrique : en plus d’être impossible à manipuler à main level, il faut un trépied lourd pour éviter tout micro mouvement et une rotule micrométrique pour faire les ajustements fin dans les 3 dimensions (ex avec la Manfrrotto 410)
• Un cable de déclenchement. On peut bien entendu utiliser le retardateur de 5-10 secondes, mais si l’on doit faire du focus stacking avec 50 photos à prendre, la commande filaire sera plus pratique
• Un rail macro: pour ajuster la distance de mise au point et bouger l’ensemble en focus stacking sans bouger le trépied il faudra utiliser un rail soit Manuel soit électrique si vous votre utilisation est fréquente
  • Manuel : Novoflex CASTEL-L
  • Automatique comme le “Stackshoot Automated macro rail package”
• Une Lampe d’assistance macro : vous aurez besoin de beaucoup de lumière. Laowa vend un anneau led d’éclairage spécifique pour cet objectif

4.2 Focus Stacking in Photoshop / La technique de focus stacking en Photoshop

1. Export files / Export des fichiers
2. Script to open them in stacking / script pour empiler et aligner
3. Merge  / Fusion

1 Export photos

• In Lightroom export all photos in full size jpg
• En Lightroom exporter vos photos en jpg pleine taille

2 Load in Photoshop / Ouverture en Photoshop

• In photoshop go to File, script, Load Files into Stack
• Tick the box “automatically align source images” to correct eventual misalignment
• En photoshop , allez dans Fichier, Scripts, chargement des fichiers dans une pile
• cochez la case “tenter d’aligner automatiquement les images sources” pour corriger les éventuel léger décalages lors de la prise de vue

3 Merge

• Select all layers
• In Edition, Auto Blend layer, Stack images
• Photoshop will merge (it takes a while) the various layers keeping the sharp part of each one
• Export final results in jpg

3 Fusion

• Sélectionnez tous les calques
• Allez dans Edition, Fusion automatique des calques, Empiler les images
• Photoshop fusionnera les différentes images en conservant les zones nettes de chaque image
• Exporter le résultat final en jpg

5 Conclusion

This Laowa 25mm F2.8 2.5-5X is a very good ultra macro lens for experts , it can give you very good results but will require that your equip yourself with the right accessories , with patience and that you practice a lot !

• If you are more looking for a standard macro lens you better look at the Sony FE 90 f2.8 Macro G OSS
