“Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong,” said Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. “It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven.”

Hoskin accused Warren of “undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage.”

Looks like Warren stuck her foot in her mouth this time.

The Cherokee nation itself has come out and rejected her DNA test as any connection to the tribe.

What exactly is/was Dr. Warren's declaration re: her Native American (NA) ancestry? AFAIK, she has said "she grew up with family stories about both grandparents on her mother’s side having some Cherokee or Delaware blood."
  • Did she assert membership in or that she's a member of a specific NA tribe, namely the Cherokee tribe? No.
  • Did she assert merely having NA ancestry? Yes.
Having watched Skip Gates' show, I think many folks' family lore tells of NA ancestry, yet DNA tests show no trace whatsoever of NA ancestry. In Warren's case, DNA testing shows she has some NA ancestry, albeit from quite a long time ago.

As goes what the Cherokee people have said:

  • [*=1]I can see they said:
[*=2]"A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship. Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person's ancestors were indigenous to North or South America. Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation. Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong."
[*=1]I can see what the DNA analyst said:
[*=2]"The analysis also identified 5 genetic segments as NA in origin at high confidence."
[*=1]I can see what the definition of "Native American" is; it lacks continental specificity within the western hemisphere.
If one has five Native American DNA segments, those segments must have come from some Native American ancestor.

My assessment for the time being:

Off-Topic:
Content I encountered searching re: how "European" one's ancestry must be for one to be white and whether extant be such categorical quantifications:

Nobody cares...This about that asshole trump spouting lies and bigoted statements

Elizabeth Warren obviously cares since she brought this news to the forefront.

I would like to go out on a limb and, say that Elizabeth was trying to score votes. She is a lair and, she is mentally ill

Well, no, Saladin. This thread is about what the Cherokees have said. Yours is only the second post, so I'm surprised that you aren't aware of what the topic is.

Here I am, imagining what else the Cherokee Nation Secretary of State might say that you would quote and applaud.

They said she isn't an indian by any stretch lmao and her claims are pretty much bogus and offensive. lol.

Nagle said many people who are non-Native have family stories about American Indian heritage “and the overwhelming amount of those stories are false and not based in identity but rather are based in a white entitlement to appropriate native land, native culture and native identity.”

so why is warren using white entitlement lmao. I thought liberals were against that sort of thing lmao.

And you probably think Trump does not try to score votes or lie. And hey you have a real original avatar name there. I wonder what your political persuasion is?

I would ask you to identify her lies or why she is mentally ill but I doubt you'd be able to come up with anything.

plus she parlayed her Native American Faux status into a Harvard professorship, despite going to a third rate law school.

The Chief is denying science in favor of oral history and that is stupid...

Only the Cherokee can say what it means to be Cherokee. A DNA report identifying a distant South American ancestor doesn’t do that.

No he is not. The Cherokee Chief said
"A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship."
Citizenship isn't determinable by DNA. Citizenship, in any nation, is a poiltical association/matter, not a genetic one. DNA testing cannot identify such affiliations. A search of written public records sometimes can uncover such affiliations. (See post #3.)

False.

The faculty charged with hiring her (they recruited her, she didn't go to them) have stated her ancestry had nothing whatsoever with her being hired. It was not mentioned, it was not considered.

Unless you're going conspiracy theory on Harvard, Princeton, Penn and Austin, the case is closed. Stop pushing falsehoods.

And Trump going around calling her Pocahantos isn't even more of an insult?

I agree with you. Calling her Pocahantas is an insult....to Pocahantas.

He needs to use the adopted name given to her by the Right: Fauxahontas

???
im confused by this story. I never followed it closely so anybody feel free to correct me where im wrong..

a woman stated what her heritage/DNA was
some people called her a liar and this also gave her some self doubt based on what her family told her
she took a test and it proved that her heritage/DNA was in fact what she said it was

some how that is judged as wrong and inappropriate by some people? LMAO by what standards?

IMO anybody "rejecting" the facts is guilty of bigotry

Harvard is well known for its hiring practices. a guy I know graduated with the highest GPA in the history of Cornell law school-didn't get a job there-Cornell was only ranked 7th when He applied. Same with a person from Duke. Lieyawatha was a graduate of Rutgers. She didn't clerk for a supreme court justice.

Elizabeth Warren obviously cares since she brought this news to the forefront.

Why yes, she does, because she identified as part in the 80's and 90's when a lot of the old family matriarchs were dying off, and she wanted to keep the family tradition and stories going on. She is also responding to the declaratory nicknames about her,and the claim that she lied. This showed she didn't.
