'Significant' fire at self-storage warehouse in Croydon

Locals were told to keep their doors and windows closed after a large fire broke out at a self-storage warehouse.

Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters were still at the scene of a fire at a self-storage warehouse in Croydon on Tuesday morning.

London Fire Brigade said crews were called to the site in Purley Way shortly before 7.50pm on New Year's Eve.

At the height of the fire, the whole of the four-storey building was alight, with 20 fire engines and around 120 firefighters in attendance.

Assistant Commissioner Graham Ellis said: "Thankfully there were no reports of anyone inside the property at the time of the fire and there were no injuries."

Pictures posted on social media suggest the fire was at a Shurgard facility.

The cause of the fire is so far unknown.
