Diocesan Spring Training! Almost 150 people came from 48 churches to gather, share and learn this past Saturday.

Legacy lecture series honors Bishop Lane's ministry
Last week more than 200 people gathered to honor the social justice ministry of Bishop Lane at a special lecture series at the University of Southern Maine. The theme for the evening was
Voices of Faith and the Faithful in Maine: Thoughts on Public Policy and Civil Discourse.

Senator Angus King and Presiding Bishop Michael Curry

The evening started with a poignant message from Senator Angus King and a special guest appearance of the Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.
Marge Kilkelly, former legislator from Lincoln County, and a veteran general convention deputy, spoke about Faith in the Modern World and how faith can break down barriers and overcome divisions.
Our own Heidi Shott, former Canon for Advocacy and Communications, spoke about Bishop Lane's leadership and advocacy as only someone who worked with him closely for over ten years could.

The Rev. Dr. Marvin Ellison talked about Bishop Lane's role and that of the diocese in the struggle for marriage equality. The Rev. Suzanne Roberts, MD, speaking from a very unique perspective as a practicing physician and priest, talked about hearing the cries of the people and the role of faith in the health care debate.
One of Bishop Lane's colleagues, Tom Ely, Bishop of Vermont, contributed to the evening by highlighting the work of Bishops United Against Gun Violence.

Rev. Jane Field

The Rev. Jane Field, Executive Director of the Maine Council of Churches, spoke about civil
discourse and the ability of people of faith to engage in public policy debates.
Ben Chin, Deputy Director of the Maine People's Alliance and a lay preacher from Trinity - Lewiston, spoke about his love for people who use drugs in a powerful testimony to seeing the face of God in everyone.
Bishop Lane's dear friend, Dr. Reza Jalali, spoke about how voices of faith can change the dialog in the immigration debate.
The evening closed with a panel discussion including Rev. Deborah Blood, Conference Minister of the United Church of Christ,
Rabbi Carolyn Braun and Bishop Lane talking about the State of Faith in Maine and how current politics are changing religious attitudes and behaviors.
John Hennessy, Director of the Maine Episcopal Network for Justice, hosted the evening and kept the two hour program moving. The entire event was recorded and can be viewed here.

Call for Bicentennial timeline project submissions
Let's start celebrating 200 years with a timeline telling the story of our diocese! We'll take a look at all of the congregations, chapels and ministries of which we are comprised. We need each organization to send their favorite three photos, the name of their congregation or ministry, the date founded, location, ministries, along with a a few (25-50) words about something that excites the group and contributes to their unique story. Please make sure your parish gets included in the Bicentennial Committee's Timeline Project! Send your information to Rachel Zoller at [email protected].

About five years ago, a community member gave us a house for this ministry, and as a result both donations of items and proceeds have increased greatly. By vote of the Vestry, all proceeds after the costs of running the building are designated for outreach. We are able to make generous grants to local organizations and to fund the Rector's Discretionary Fund. "

Ernest Bloch's Sacred Service at Bowdoin & Camden Opera House
Bowdoin College Chorus & Mozart Mentors Orchestra present Ernest Bloch's Sacred Service / Avodath Hakodesh with baritone soloist Cantor Scott Sokol on Sunday, May 5 and Monday, May 6.
There is also an opportunity to attend the concert at the Camden Opera House on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.
The performances are given in memory of those who lost their lives at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA.
They will be conducted by Anthony Antolini, Music Director at the Episcopal Church of St. John Baptist in Thomaston.

Workshop offered by Maine Council of Churches to address overdose crisis
More than one Mainer a day dies from an overdose-they are our children, our parents, our sisters and brothers, our friends, our co-workers, and our congregants.
At this day-long workshop sponsored by the Maine Council of Churches, faith leaders will: learn about the science and the stories related to substance use disorder, harm reduction, compassionate care, overdose prevention, criminal justice and public policy; hear about churches in Maine already involved in responding at the local level; get trained in administering naloxone and receive free NARCAN to keep in an emergency kit at your house of worship.

Maine Episcopal Youth's Bishop celebration
All parishes are invited to send a team of 6th-12th grade youth, along with a chaperone, to St. David's in Kennebunk, June 22-23, for a Bishop Celebration Overnight. The overnight will include a viewing party of the Consecration of Thomas J. Brown, complete with Bishop BINGO, and youth will also have the chance to meet and worship with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. This is a fun-forward event, filled with exciting games, opportunities to make new friends, and topped off with make-your-own ice cream sundaes. Cost is $18 for individual youth, or $65 for youth groups. Scholarships are available. Check out maineyouth.org to find out more and to register. Parish conference for stewardship teams
The Project Resource Parish Conference June 25 - June 27 invites you to bring a stewardship team to will train in planning and developing annual giving campaigns, major gift asks, and planned giving initiatives. An ideal parish team would consist of 5 members including the parish clergy, parish communications person, stewardship committee chair, and other committed lay leaders. At the minimum, each team must havethe parish priest and two lay leaders. The conference will be held June 25-27, 2019, at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville, NC and will be limited to 75 participants. Registration will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.
