Dr. Bethany Jackson works as part of the Rights Lab's Measurement and Geographies Programme to map environmental change resulting from slavery. This includes collecting data on the factors and processes that create a nexus of environmental degradation and slavery activity. The work conceptualises the role of environmental policies in the relationship between the environment and slavery. Its focus on the ecological dimensions of human vulnerability to enslavement explores how communities can become more resilient to ecological threats. Her PhD analysed the Asian brick kiln industry using remotely sensed imagery and demonstrated how a geospatial practice primarily been used for environmental studies can also be used to understand the problem of modern slavery.
