Are You Experiencing Real School Fundraiser Satisfaction?

Discover how to ask the right questions to make sure that you’re getting the most out of your school fundraising program 

Most sponsors that appear satisfied with their school fundraisers are also most likely content with their current company. There’s no reason to change. The company does everything they ask. Their student fundraising packets arrived at the school already collated, their kickoff went off without a hitch, and the products showed up in good condition with very few issues. In the grand scheme of things, nothing really seemed to go wrong. 
What more could any school expect? 
At least on the surface, everything went as expected. In reality, as is the case with many schools, if they were to probe a little deeper, issues just might be uncovered that no one has thought about before. There are always ways to do things better that could help make a school’s fundraising results even better. 

The real question that every school should be asking is, “Are you satisfied with the status quo, or are you willing to look for new and unique fundraising ideas that may make your sale even better?”
Far too many schools are satisfied with average, just because they know what to expect and the process is predictable. No one is saying that you still can’t have better fundraising results without a simple and smooth process. In fact, you should expect ‘effective’ and ‘efficient’ to make great teammates. Here are some things to ponder that just might motivate you to step out of the ‘safe zone’.

Ask Good Fundraising Questions Up Front 

On the surface, everything seems fine. You probably don’t want to rock the boat. It’s hard to step outside your comfort zone. Yet if you were to dig a little deeper, would you find things that might cause you to question your satisfaction with your current school fundraising company? Consider asking yourself these questions:
  • Are your student's customers still satisfied with the products they are purchasing? 
  • What would your customers really say about the quality of the fundraising products they received?
  • How excited are your students about the prizes they won? 
  • Are they expecting the same prizes next year?
  • Are you really satisfied with the amount of money that you made? 
  • Have you grown used to having to do more than one fundraiser?
  • Have your sales trended up or down over the past 2 to 3 years?
You may be surprised at the responses that you get. Many people receive cheap merchandise that's much smaller than they thought. They don’t say anything because they’re either used to the quality or they justify it by saying, “It’s just a fundraiser”. And most students get less than desirable prizes. Schools are satisfied with the money they've made because they're just used to it.

How Product Merchandise Affects Buyers

School fundraising companies tend to justify the lack of product quality. You might hear something like, “Unlike a pure donation, at least the customer is getting something in return for their money.” Unfortunately, most people already understand what that really means. The mentality of many buyers is playing it safe by purchasing lower-priced items. They already see it as a donation. They may just want to do something for the school or help their child win a prize. Or, return a favor to a best friend who bought from them in the past.
Yet, what if instead brochures actually offered good value products that were comparable to the retail stores at a competitive price? Is this even possible?

The Effects of Prize Programs on Students 

When it comes to the prizes, most younger students are initially excited about the bigger and more exciting prizes on their prize flyer. However, once they get home, they realize that they have to sell a whole lot of items in order to win those prizes. This can lead to discouragement or their parents will simply refuse to sell that many items. As a result, most students don't reach these bigger more worthwhile prize levels. This can adversely affect future sales because people become skeptical and end up not participating at all.
