Disability Services is here to support faculty as they make this transition. It is important to understand that the University’s responsibility to ensure accessible courses, programs, and services has not changed. The Office of Civil Rights has already posted a short video affirming those obligations.
Faculty hold a crucial role in helping the university meet our legal responsibility to provide access. Disability Services will be available remotely to support faculty so they can engage with students in the virtual classroom during this time. While the “how” of disability service delivery may look a little different for spring quarter, the “what” will not change, facilitating equal access and an inclusive environment for our students is paramount. No, the process is the same. However, intake and update meetings are taking place via phone or Zoom.
Yes. Students will still need to notify faculty if they are planning to use accommodations.
This has not changed. Students can contact Disability Services by email (DS@seattleu.edu) or (206) 296-5740. Students who are not yet registered with DS should complete the New Student Application located on our Getting Started page.
Students may need modified ways to participate (voice only, limited or no video) depending on their disability. Faculty will receive notification of accommodations from Disability Services if a student is approved for an adjustment. If you have any questions or concerns about a student’s approved accommodation, please contact Disability Services immediately.
As Seattle University is physically closed and instruction has moved online, the DS Testing Center’s physical location is also closed. However, testing is open virtually and the process for requesting accommodated testing has not changed. Maintaining the process ensures students are providing proper notice regarding accommodated testing requests.
Students are still required to submit requests for testing accommodations at least three business days in advance in order to ensure faculty have appropriate notification and accommodations can be implemented.
All Timed Exams. Students with disabilities are expected to start exams at the same time as other students in the course - unless the student has back to back courses. If the student has back-to-back courses, contact the student to set up an alternative testing time for the quarter and send confirmation of said time to testingcenter@seattleu.edu.
Adding Time To Canvas. For timed Canvas exams, quizzes, and finals, faculty must manually add time for students who have extended time on exams as an approved accommodation. Canvas has posted instructions for how to add time to individual student exams. If you are using a different learning platform, please contact DS immediately.
DS will help facilitate accommodations. Testing Center staff is available for consultation and to assist you in providing extended time in Canvas for students with disabilities. Please contact testingcenter@seattleu.edu or (206) 398-4378.
Disability Services will notify you, via the Faculty Notification Letter, if a student in your course requires a Real-Time (live) captioner or interpreter. DS will hire the 3rd party captioner and send you the name of that individual. Once you know who the captioner or interpreter is you will need to:

Yes. Please log-in to your myDS account and send your Faculty Notification Letters as you would for any quarter.
DS has temporarily removed accommodations that are only appropriate for the physical campus location. You are still approved and those accommodations will be available to request when face-to-face classes resume. Please contact your main DS contact person if you would like to discuss this. Yes, if it is a timed exam. Students need to follow the same process and deadlines for Testing Accommodations as in previous quarters. Schedule your test 3 business days in advance through myDS and Faculty will receive a reminder to make the appropriate adjustments on each exam. DS can help facilitate accommodations as needed. It is not necessary to schedule projects or untimed exams.
The process for signing up to test in myDS has not changed. Students still need to start tests at the same time as their peers and schedule timed exams through myDS.
Yes. Submit your request for FTE in myDS. If you need assistance sending the Faculty Notification Letter or you have already submitted your request and your financial statement is still incorrect, please contact Valerie Fisher at DS@seattleu.edu or call (206) 296-5740.
