Other Walking Opportunities in East Kent

Below are a selection of other walking opportunities available to the general public in East Kent. If you would like to appear here, please direct your enquiry to enquiries@thanetwalkingfestival.co.uk.

The Ramblers Association Kent Area

You will find lots of information about our groups and how to contact them. We have thirteen groups spread right across Kent so there will be one near you if you want to meet some local ramblers and join in any of their activities.

Ramblers Association White Cliffs Group

We have over 500 members in our Group, of which some 100 people are regular walkers. We try to achieve a varied programme with walks from 2.5 to over 30 miles, breakfast and evening walks in the Summer, and special events such as "pudding" and "curry" walks where we reward ourselves for our physical exertions with a thoroughly greedy feast afterwards.

Dover and Thanet Rights of Way Society

The Society was founded in 1974 to walk and protect the footpaths of East Kent, and we still regularly clear overgrown paths in the area.
We walk every other Sunday morning with a 10.30 start (10 o'clock in summertime), and normally cover 5 or 6 miles in 2 to 2 1/2 hours. These walks are either in or very close to the Dover and Thanet District areas, and are well supported. We also arrange whole day walks a little further afield on one Saturday each month. All start at 10 a.m., and are 10 to 14 miles long with a pub lunch en route. Evening social events are also organised during the year.
New members (and visitors to the area) are always welcome. The annual subscription is £5 per family, and includes two copies of "Waymarker" magazine, produced by our members.

St. Peters Costumed Walks

These are guided walks around the historic village of St. Peters near Broadstairs. The past is dramatically brought to life by costumed characters recreating days gone by.
During the guided tour visitors hear about life in the village over the past 400 years, they visit fascinating heritage buildings and places the casual visitor would never discover. Even local people may have a few surprises!

Margate Civic Society

(includes Birchington, Cliftonville and Westgate)
The Margate Civic Society was founded in 1968. It is a registered charity. The society's purpose and aim is to encourage high standards of architecture and town planning in Margate and its environs. It works to stimulate public interest and care for the history and character of the area and to encourage the preservation, development and improvement of features of general amenity and historical interest.
Town Pride awards are given annually to those buildings which have been refurbished, cleaned or modified to enhance the appearance of the town. New, high quality buildings are also eligible for the award. The society monitors and reacts to local planning applications.
Evening meetings are held monthly between October and May at the Walpole Bay Hotel, Fifth Avenue, Cliftonville. The talks, usually illustrated, explore aspects of the locality in interesting and varied ways. Some afternoon meetings are also held. A newsletter is published four times a year.
More Information - Contact the Membership Secretary on 01843 228174

Ramsgate Costumed Walks

These are four walks around different parts of the town held throughout July and August. Each walk is led by knowledgeable local guides who introduce Ramsgate characters from the past - famous or not so famous. There is no set charge for these walks as we are all volunteers but donations to help meet the cost of the walks are welcome.
