Hardwood DNA
When the NBA's Western Conference Championship tipped off on Tuesday, May 14 the Curry Brothers -- Steph and Seth -- made their parents -- Sonya and Dell -- incredibly proud, completely conflicted and the national focus on quality parenting. They were the first brothers to face off in an NBA conference final.
If you think of your hoops trivia, how many brothers have run on NBA courts since the league tipped off?
Here is a list of all the sets of brothers who have played in the NBA. (Names in bold type are still running.)

If you named all 62 of them without looking it up, please seek immediate medical attention and then call Jeopardy for a tryout.
You also knew that the Jones Brothers from Arkansas needed only one more for their own starting five, to join Caldwell, Charles, Major and Wil.
Two-on-Two? There have been a number of dynamic duos. If these brothers were to set up a two-on-two tournament, go ahead and pick the winners out of this group. Marc and Pau Gasol Horace and Harvey Grant Bernard and Albert King Jim and John Paxson Brent and Mark Price Dominique and Gerald Wilkins Steph and Seth Curry
3-on-3? The Barry's, Jon, Brent and Drew, could challenge the Russell's, Campy, Frank and Walker, to a game of 3-on-3. That winner takes on the winner of the Zeller's, Luke, Tyler and Cody vs. the Plumlee's, Mason, Miles and Marshall. The two teams then square off in a 3-point shooting contest to find the winner.
You Look Just Like Me How many of the brothers are DNA carbon copies of each other? Robin and Brook Lopez Markieff and Morriss Tom and Dick Van Arsdale Jason and Jarron Collins Horace and Harvey Grant Joey and Steven Graham
Since Father's Day is right around the corner on June 16, we know that Dell Curry might be the happiest hoop Dad around. I'll be back with my Father Knows Best column right before Dad's Day.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
I loved the Amgen Tour of California coverage. I used to see it every Spring but it does not come
through Livermore this year... and it was always a great lift for me. My bicycle was my mode of
transportation for so many years in France and my father did a lot of races and he biked until it
was 90! He even raced a lot in the Napa Valley area with friends he had met in France while
cycling! He was a great man and let's go Warriors and Sharks. These guys have to be strong.
Thanks for all the great work, as usual.
Elisabeth (Betty) C.

Dear Editor:
I don't know if this falls under the category of Sports Bar but as I didn't see it mentioned in
your Ultimate Sports Guide, I'd like to give a shout out to the wonderful New Parkway Theater
at 474 24th Street in Oakland's 'uptown' district where, in comfort and community, you can
watch Warriors games live on a jumbo screen. Price is right, too! $12.50 general admission/
$10.50 students and seniors. They serve good food to eat while you watch. Beer too.

photographer Rich Yee was just singled out for more honors last
week when Bay to Breakers selected Rich to be their official race
photographer. This adds to his collection as in 2017 Rich won a
national Western Fairs Association contest and his winning photo
appeared as the cover of their Spring 2017 magazine.
Rich contributes to almost every issue of Sports Today and in this edition you will find his Bay to Breakers photos, along with those of the San Jose Sharks vs. St. Louis Blues match from last week and a San Francisco Giants photo. During the Warriors' championship parade last year Draymond Green said of his newborn son, Draymond Jamal Green, Jr., that he was a "dream come true." 108th Bay to Breakers
Thousands of runners break from the start line of the 108th Bay to Breakers held on Sunday morning, May 19. Since 1912 over two million costumed runners, walkers and centipedes have completed the iconic 12K journey from the San Francisco Bay to the breakers on Ocean Beach.

In 1978 the U.C. Davis Aggies Track Club was named the first-ever World Centipede Running Champion, finishing as a unit 130th overall out of a total of 16,000 race entrants. Centipedes have been a Bay to Breakers staple ever since. Above, a 2019 entrant easily completes the race.
|
Centipede guidelines: Groups of 13 or more runners travel the full 12k (or 15k if one is doing the Breakers Bonus) course together linked by a bungee cord or other safe mechanism; groups can run the course competitively or just for fun; and seeded and sub-seeded centipedes are eligible for awards. San Francisco Giants Report
Wielding a red-hot bat, Pablo Sandoval continues to bail out the Giants, most recently in the 10th inning of Sunday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the score tied 2-2, Sandoval hit his third career pinch-hit home run and second in two games, which stood up for the winning run. Final score: Giants 3, D-backs 2. The infectious free-swinger is shown above fouling off a pitch at Oracle Park earlier this year against the New York Yankees.
* * *
Last week San Francisco faced off against Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays at Oracle Park for a two-game midweek set. Vladdy Jr. mashed his first homer of his MLB career in the first inning to put the Jays up to an early 3-0 lead and added his second blast in the sixth inning to all but sealed San Francisco's fate. Final score: Blue Jays 7, Giants 3. The Giants bounced back on Wednesday, propeled by homers from Brandon Crawford and Aramis Garcia. Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, despite his performance, to make room for Buster Posey's return from the injured list (concussion).
On Friday the Arizona Diamondbacks routed the Giants 7-0 to open a three-game series at Chase Field. Jeff Samrdzija allowed three runs on five innings pitched before Derek Holland continued the Giants' pitching woes, letting in four runs of his own in just one complete inning. With Madison Bumgarner dealing, the Giants bounced back on Saturday with an 8-5 victory. MadBum allowed four runs in six and a third innings, though he struck out six before running into trouble in the seventh.
Bumgarner is a prominent force for the Giants but his time may run out soon as he enters free agency at the end of this season. Dealing with a struggling team and manager Bruce Bochy's retirement at the end of the season, this may be a timely departure for MadBum, who released his eight-team no-trade list this week. The list included current MLB powerhouses, such as the Astros, Brewers, Phillies, and Yankees.
LHP Drew Pomeranz returned to the Giants lineup from the injured list (back) on Sunday, allowing two runs over four and two thirds innings. Tied up at two runs apiece, the rubber match at Chase Field went into extra innings as Brandon Crawford made a stunning play in the ninth inning to extend the game. Pablo Sandoval pinch-hit the Giants to a 3-2 win in the tenth inning.
The Giants, now 20-25 and tied with Colorado for last in the NL West, kick off a seven-game home stand this week with four games against the Atlanta Braves before taking on the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-game weekend series.

Oakland A's Report
Saint Mary's Gaels basketball head coach Randy Bennett stands on the field as part of Saint Mary's College Night before the game between the Oakland Athletics and the Cincinnati Reds at the Oakland Coliseum on Wednesday evening, May 8. Caption and photo by Darren Yamashita.
* * *
The Athletics started last week in Seattle with a two-game set against the Mariners. Even though Oakland recorded five homers in Monday's matchup at T-Mobile Park, including two from Khris Davis, late pitching woes led to a 6-5 defeat in 10 innings. Lou Trivino allowed a three-run bomb in the eighth inning to even the score at 4-4 and Joakim Soria allowed two runs in the bottom of the tenth to erase a 5-4 A's lead. Tuesday produced a similarly frustrating 4-3 loss, with the A's plating only three runs against a struggling Mariners pitching staff.
In need of a boost, the Athletics defeated the Tigers in high-octane fashion in Detroit on Thursday, 17-3. Oakland was fueled by 16 hits and a standout performance from righty Chris Bassitt, who tossed eight scoreless innings and allowed just four hits. Jurickson Profar mashed his first career grand slam in the win. The A's were victorious again in Friday's matchup as Frankie Montas fell one out shy of his first complete game, allowing just two hits and delivered ten strikeouts to lead the A's to a 7-2 victory at Comerica Park. On Saturday starting pitcher Daniel Mengden threw seven complete innings to continue solid pitching performances from Oakland, allowing just one earned run to secure a 4-1 victory. Remarkably, the A's have won 15 straight games against the Tigers.
Looking for the four-game sweep on Sunday, the A's were ahead 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning before a rain delay postponed the game until Sept. 6. This was a particularly frustrating decision by the Comerica Park grounds crew because not only did it inhibit Oakland momentum but the game could have been over with three more outs.
The Athletics completed a (much-needed) trade on Tuesday by sending away DH/1B Kendrys Morales to the Yankees in exchange for cash considerations. Morales hit .204 with just a single homer in his A's stint and committed several costly defensive miscues.
The A's are in third place in the AL West, sitting on a 22-25 record. Oakland will close out their road trip this week with a three-game series in Cleveland before heading back to the Coliseum for a weekend series with the Mariners, in which they hope to redeem four straight losses earlier against Seattle.

San Jose Earthquakes 4 vs. Chicago Fire 1
Chris Wondolowski scores four goals to break all-time MLS record
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the Chicago Fire, 4-1, at Avaya Stadium on Saturday afternoon, May 18. Quakes forward and captain Chris Wondolowski scored all four goals in the Quakes' win, giving him 148 for his career and eclipsing Landon Donovan's MLS goal-scoring record of 145.
Wondolowski tallied his first game-winning goal of the season and 41st of his MLS career, moving into a tie with Landon Donovan for most game-winning goals in MLS history. Wondolowski also scored multiple goals in a single match for the first time since June 30, 2018 and tallied 3+ goals for the first time since Oct. 6, 2012.
San Jose earned its fourth consecutive home victory, in which they've outscored opponents 12-2 and allowed just one goal from the run of play. The Quakes' are 4-2-2 in their last eight matches, their best eight-match span since the first eight games of the 2016 season.
The victory came against a Chicago side that entered Saturday on a three-match unbeaten streak and hadn't allowed a single goal during that span. The Earthquakes have now won four consecutive home matches for just the second time since 2013 (June 24 - Aug. 5, 2017).
San Jose holds a 4-2-2 record since the start of April, their best eight-match span since the first eight matches of the 2016 season (4-2-2).
