February 9, 2021
Dear Friends,

The next new moon, which forms on February 11 at 11:05 AM PST at 23º Aquarius, calls us to take a big step forward. Not only are the Sun and Moon in Aquarius, but Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn as well, greatly intensifying the cosmic spotlight on how our choices make a difference in the world. Aquarius reminds us that we are all unique, all equal, and all poised on an evolutionary edge. Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter conjunct each other from February 11-14, encouraging open minds and open hearts, while Saturn makes a catalytic square to Uranus on February 17, pushing for fundamental changes and reminding us that we’re all in this together. This new moon marks the eve of the Chinese New Year and the beginning of the Year of the Yin Metal Ox, emphasizing the importance of creativity, discernment, and teamwork. Where are we ready for a quantum leap? What do we need to change in order to move forward? Where do we need to think out of the box and join forces?

The V formation used by geese, swans, and other birds, provides a fitting analogy for the synergistic power of Aquarius, where combined efforts achieve far more than individual actions, and where everyone matters. Researchers have found that geese are able to fly 70% farther together by taking advantage of the updraft created from the wings of the other geese. When the head goose gets tired, it goes to the back and another goose takes the lead. When a sick or wounded goose falls out of formation, two other geese stay with it to help. Human fighter pilots also fly in V-formation to improve fuel economy and coordination. For more, read the Symmetry of Birds in Group Flight by Jim Gilbert here.

Venus conjoins Jupiter at 13º Aquarius a few hours before this new moon, and remains close by as Mercury aligns with Jupiter on February 14, spotlighting the value of networking, brainstorming, and collaboration, emphasizing the Aquarian truth that together we can accomplish much more than we could separately. Mercury, because of its retrograde phase, makes three conjunctions with Jupiter this spring (January 11 at 5º15’, February 14 at 13º20’ and March 4 at 17º32’), promoting optimism and generosity, as well as helping us see where old assumptions may be holding us back. Mercury moves retrograde until February 20, advising us to trust intuition as well as logic, and discern what is fact and what is opinion, belief, or fabrication. From February 20 to April 27, all planets are in forward motion, indicating an accelerated time of manifestation.

James Clear, in his insightful article: Why Facts Don’t Change Our Minds, explains how friendship and kinship play a vital role in how we see the world: “Humans are herd animals… For most of our evolutionary history, our ancestors lived in tribes. Becoming separated from the tribe—or worse, being cast out—was a death sentence… When we have to choose between the two, people often select friends and family over facts… The way to change people’s minds is to become friends with them, to integrate them into your tribe, to bring them into your circle… As proximity increases, so does understanding… If someone you know, like, and trust believes a radical idea, you are more likely to give it merit, weight, or consideration… the best place to ponder a threatening idea is in a non-threatening environment. As a result, books are often a better vehicle for transforming beliefs than conversations or debates… The word “kind” originated from the word “kin.” When you are kind to someone it means you are treating them like family… Develop a friendship. Share a meal. Gift a book. Be kind first, be right later.” For the full article, well worth reading, click here.

Saturn, the traditional ruler of Aquarius, and Uranus, the modern ruler, square each other three times in 2021: (February 17, June 14, and December 23). Saturn symbolizes form and structure on all levels, from personal ego constructs, patterns, and beliefs to governments, corporations, and institutions of all kinds. Where Saturn is in our chart, either at birth or transiting, describes where we are learning about limits, responsibility, and becoming our own authority.

Uranus corresponds to individuation and the breakdown of outmoded structures; where it is located in our chart, where natal or transit, is where we need to be inventive, authentic, and willing to operate without social approval. Squares mark important turning points, where we have to make some kind of shift before we can move forward. Squares between Saturn and Uranus counsel us to make conscious, constructive changes, rather than resist or rebel. On a collective level, Saturn in Aquarius impels social, political, and technological reform, while Uranus in Taurus galvanizes re-envisioning in how we deal with money, resources, and the Earth.

Saturn and Uranus are in a waning square, which Dane Rudhyar termed “a crisis in consciousness,” requiring a shift in perspective and a release of what blocks future development. This often involves major changes in ideologies, with fears of change increasing polarization between conservative and progressive forces. Squares, and all aspects, are stages of a synodic cycle, which begin with the previous conjunction and end with the next one.

Saturn and Uranus were last conjunct in 1988 (meeting three times: February 12, June 26, and October 18, at 27-29º Sagittarius). That year saw the waning of the Cold War and the USSR, the first discussions of a World Wide Web at CERN, and the beginning of a multinational effort to eradicate polio by the WHO, UNICEF, and the Rotary Foundation. Also important in 1988 were United Nations and US Senate hearings on global warming, the first Fair Trade label, and the US Congress override of Regan’s veto on the Civil Rights Restoration Act, banning discrimination based on gender. The next conjunction of Saturn and Uranus will be on June 28, 2032 at 28º Gemini.

The last time Saturn and Uranus were in a waning square was from October 4, 1975 to April 22, 1977 (five times, 1-10º Leo-Scorpio). This period coincided with a swine flu outbreak in the US and a rushed mass immunization program which was suspended three months later, as reports of increasing cases of paralysis, respiratory arrest, and death, termed Guillain-Barré Syndrome, were reported in eleven states. That period also coincided with a US energy crisis, National Academy of Science reports that gases from spray cans damage the ozone layer, and landing on Mars by the Viking I and II spacecraft. Three missions, launched last July, arrive on Mars this month: the UAE's Hope enters Mars orbit on February 9, China's Tianwen-1 on February 10, and NASA's Perseverance on February 18. For more on those missions click here.

Saturn and Uranus’ prior oppositions (November 4, 2008 to July 26, 2010, five times, from 19º Virgo-Pisces to 1º Libra-Aries) coincided with the H1N1 2009 pandemic (aka swine flu), declared on June 11, 2009, whose vaccine safety was reported to be comparable to seasonal flu vaccines. Other important events that year were the Arab Spring protests, a global financial crisis with massive bailouts, the election of the first Black US president, the creation of Bitcoin, and the launch of the Kepler space observatory.

This current stellium in Aquarius indicates a collective readiness for radical social, political, and technological change. The last time there were this many planets in Aquarius was 59 years ago. On February 4, 1962 there was a total solar eclipse at 15º44’ Aquarius, with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the South Node in Aquarius (within 16º of each other, from 2º to 19º). That year saw the first transatlantic satellite television transmission, the first multiprogramming computer, and the formation of the European Space Agency. Later that year Rachel Carson's Silent Spring and Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions were published, as well as FDA investigations into Thalidomide and severe birth defects. It was the beginning of the United Farm Workers, the onset of Nelson Mandela’s 28 year imprisonment, and James Meredith defying segregation at the University of Mississippi.

This new moon, plus the upcoming Saturn-Uranus square, signify that this year will also be a time of extraordinary developments. "While many long for things to go back to 'normal,' humanity’s evolution lies in neither returning to “business as usual,” nor authoritarianism and technocracy, but rather a third pathway, where we collectively take responsibility for the well-being of all life, and make a great transition in every area of our lives: the food that we eat, the transportation that we use, the clothes that we wear, the home and community in which we live, the education we seek, and much more. Beyond personal changes are a vast array of other changes ranging from energy sources throughout the economy including businesses and government, the content of television programming and advertising, the nature of education, the structure of the urban environment, and much more. Overall, this is a path of great creativity, new freedoms and conscious choice… The human family is being called to a higher role and responsibility of living on this Earth. If we can awaken our collective imagination, we have a future of promise. If we can imagine it, we can create it. First we have to imagine it."
