What is the Aleksandrów Łódzki Phase 3 Project?

At the International Conference on Jewish Genealogy in Jerusalem in July 2015, Jewish Records Indexing – Poland announced the launch of 'Phase 3', an important new initiative that affects all of us searching our Jewish Roots in Poland.

The aim of this initiative is to make available to researchers full extracts of all town records with links to online digital images.  For Aleksandrów Łódzki, we are dealing with approximately 10,800 vital records covering the period 1826 - 1917.

You can read more about the project in this article by JRI-Poland's Chief Executive, Stanley Diamond here

What's new?

As of February 2020, JRI-Poland has acquired scans of original Jewish vital records from Aleksandrów Łódzki from the Łódz branch of the Polish State Archives which
go right up to 1917

We have two goals

1. To extract and translate the vital records from Aleksandrów Łódzki already indexed online for the period 1826 - 1905, and make scans of those original records available to researchers.

2. To produce a basic index for the newly acquired records from Aleksandrów Łódzki for the period 1905-1917, and then to extract and translate those vital records, and make scans of those records available to researchers.

The challenge

We are just starting to extract the records from the year 1826 with the help of volunteers, but obviously a small pool of volunteers can only take us so far. For the most part, we must rely on the support of researchers like you to pay professional Polish translators to extract the considerable data we have amassed.

The total cost of this is in the region of US$5,000.  At the moment, our available funds limit us to extracting records a year or two at a time so over the coming months, we will be fundraising in earnest in the hopes of completing this project within a reasonable timeframe.

How can you get involved?

We are aiming to fundraise approximately US$5,000 over the next 12 months to extract more than 10,000 Jewish vital records from Aleksandrów for the period
1826-1917.

To help us fund the Phase 3 Project, and to take advantage of the newly acquired records now in our possession, we are asking our supporters to consider making a donation.

Any donor who makes a qualifying contribution totalling US$200 will be given privileged access to the records as they become available, and before they go online. If you, your family, or a foundation with which you are associated, are in the position to make a substantial donation, perhaps as a ‘challenge grant,’ it could make a significant difference to the success of this project.

As a qualifying donor, you will be eligible to receive an Excel file with record entries for your family in the Aleksandrów Łódzki records from 1826 to 1917.  Initially you will receive the currently available data.  As record extracts become available, you will be sent updated files.  We can also provide you with scans of original records.

When the project has been fully funded, all data will be added to the JRI-Poland database and available for current researchers and future generations of researchers interested in tracing their Jewish roots in Aleksandrów Łódzki and the nearby towns whose families were often closely related to the Aleksandrów Łódzki Jewish community.

What's next?

In the fullness of time, once the Aleksandrów Phase 3 Project for has been completed, we hope to make other types of records accessible to researchers, such as Books of Residents, pre-1826 patronymic records and cemetery records.

The generosity of our supporters will continue to be essential to the viability of this work.
