TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State volleyball head coach Sanja Tomasevic has announced the hire of the new assistant coach Emily Witsaman, coming to ASU from across town at Grand Canyon University.

"I'm super excited to add Emily to our Sun Devil family," Tomasevic said. "Her previous experience playing middle blocker and coaching middles will be amazing to add to our staff. Her ability to connect with people and recruits is really exciting and something I am looking forward to adding to our staff."

Witsaman will join the staff with three years of prior coaching experience. In the 2018 season, she was with Grand Canyon where she coached a WAC All-Freshman player and the team to an 11-17 overall record. Before GCU, she coached at Upper Iowa, where the Peacocks had a historic 21-9 year. She also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Heidelberg University where the Berg reached the NCAA tournament in both seasons.

In addition to coaching experience, Witsaman has a lot of playing experience. She was a four-year player at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. In her senior season, she was named to the America East All-Conference First Team as a middle blocker after finishing the year with the second-best hitting percentage in the league (.295). That same year, she led her team to a second-place finish at the American East Tournament. She finished her career ranked sixth in program history in block assists and tenth in total blocks.

"I'd like to thank Sanja for giving me the opportunity to join her coaching staff along with Carlos and the Sun Devil administration, specifically Ken Landphere and Don Bocchi," Witsaman said. "I am truly thankful to be surrounded by an amazing staff at Arizona State. I'd also like to thank GCU head coach Tim Nollan and the Lopes staff for providing me with a solid foundation to best prepare myself for my new position in the Pac-12. I can't express how grateful I am for this opportunity. I am excited to be a part of the Sun Devil family and I'm thrilled for the chance to contribute to such a successful program!"

Witsaman is from Medina, Ohio and graduated from Medina High School before attending UMBC. She earned a master's degree in business administration from Heidelberg and is a graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy Class 43.
