Nikon announced the winners of its 2023 Photo Contest, which is one of the world’s largest photo and film competitions. Now in its 50th year, the top picks were selected from approximately 70,000 entries.

Winners of the Grand Prize, Excellence Award, and Special Encouragement Award were selected from that massive pool that included entries from 35,000 individuals from 180 countries around the world. Additionally, Nikon this year added a new General Public Award category that was determined by public voting. For that new category, two images have been honored.

The Grand Prize winners were selected from among the Excellence Award winners of each competition. The Grand Prize recipient for the Photo Competition was a work titled “Tears in the rain,” entered by Austin Garcia (from the Philippines).

“During the well-known festival here in Angono called the ‘Higantes Festival,’ I was drawn to this subject wherein a child was clinging tight to his father, while around the child was chaos caused from the celebration of the festival,” Garcia says, describing the photo seen above.

“Water was splashing everywhere and in this particular scene you can see the amount of the water being thrown into the crowd.”

The recipient of the Grand Prize for the Short Film Competition was a work in the Super Short Film Category titled “Margaret Gallagher is real,” entered by Josh Spindler (from the United Kingdom).

“In a speculative timeline where the climate crisis was forced to a tipping point, causing a planetary reaction which changed the way we see the world, Margaret Gallagher still lives ‘off-grid’ like she has done her entire life,” Spindler says. “She talks of the Internet and the ever-worsening weather as we see a glimpse of the blueprint to a way of life that may save us from the end of the world.”

The photo below, titled “Thirsty calf,” is the winner of the Photo General Public Award and was captured by Me Ko Lay from Myanmar.

And finally, the film below titled “The Apartment” by Nicolás De Aguinaga from Mexico is the recipient of the Nikon Photo Contest 2022-2023 Short Film Competition, General Public Award.

The awards ceremony video will be released on the Nikon Photo Contest website at the beginning of October. Additionally, Nikon says it has plans to exhibit and screen the winning projects in street advertising, at events in several major cities, and in Nikon facilities around the world. Those details will be posted on Nikon’s Photo Contest website at an undisclosed later date. However, Nikon confirms that it will start with the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2023 Screening in Autumn to be held in Ebisu, Tokyo.

All winning photos and films can be seen on the Nikon Photo Contest website.
