Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
Vice-President Kamala Harris boarded a school bus in the fall of 1969 to attend Thousand Oaks Elementary School in an affluent part of North Berkeley. Busing was already a hot-button political issue across the nation. The controversy was driven by white opposition to school desegregation. This invited session uses primary documents from citizens who wrote to their congressional representatives regarding busing in Texas during the 1950’s. After sharing the documents, panelists will discuss segregation through busing by sharing their experiences as we collectively reflect on a time of institutional racism through transportation.
