Padres catcher Luis Campusano was arrested Saturday in Georgia on suspicion of felony marijuana possession.

According to the police report, 79 grams of marijuana was discovered in Campusano’s car when he was pulled over shortly after 5 a.m. in Grovetown, Ga., near his hometown of Augusta.

Georgia law states possession of more than one ounce (28.35 grams) of marijuana is a felony and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. (In California, possession of 79 grams would be considered a misdemeanor and be punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a $500 fine.)

The report states Campusano was charged with “purchase/possession/manufacture/distribution/sale/controlled (substance).”

Campusano, whose employer is listed as the San Diego Padres on the police report, was released on a $5,000 bond.

“We were recently notified of the arrest of Luis Campusano in his hometown of Augusta, Ga. this past weekend,” the Padres said in a statement. “We are gathering information and have been in contact with MLB and local authorities. As this is a pending legal matter, we will not have any further comment at this time.”

The 22-year-old Campusano, the organization’s second-ranked position prospect, was called up to the major leagues for the first time in September and hit a home run in his fourth plate appearance. He was on the roster for the Padres’ two postseason series, striking out in a pinch-hit appearance in Game 3 of the National League Division Series.
