Featuring James M. Stephenson as Composer & Conductor

Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 PM
The Church of the Holy Spirit

The International Chamber Artists (ICA) joins together with internationally acclaimed composer James M. Stephenson to present his exciting program designed for children of all ages, Once Upon a Symphony. Join us at this special afternoon performance this Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 PM at the Church of the Holy Spirit (400 E. Westminster, Lake Forest, IL).

While Stephenson conducts his imaginative opus, Artistic Director Patrick Godon narrates, detailing the musical explorations of Maddie, a young composer. This program is a fast-paced, colorful way to get to know the musical instruments of the symphony orchestra. Presented by an all star 15-piece chamber orchestra, part of the program involves the audience composing a piece that the ensemble then performs.

DUSK 'TIL DAWN

ICA joins forces with the Tower Chorale, conducted by Patrick Godon, to present this concert of enthralling music from around the world. Join us for our performances this Saturday, November 9 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, November 10 at 3:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of La Grange (150 S. Ashland Ave., La Grange, IL).

The centerpiece of the concert is Christopher Tin’s Calling All Dawns, with the 90-voice Tower Chorale and 18-piece ICA Chamber Orchestra. This song cycle won the Crossover Classical Grammy in 2011, shortly after its debut. It is a sprawling piece, with 12 movements, each with wonderful soloists and each in a different language — and none of them in English. The stirring last movement neatly encapsulates the composer’s message: “May peace be widespread.”

Here's a must-read testimonial from one of the Chorale members:

"I was completely blown away by last night's rehearsal with the orchestra! What a fantastic sound we all made! I have enjoyed learning Calling All Dawns, and have mentioned to my wife that I like the music, even though it is very challenging for me--so kind of a luke-warm endorsement. However, after hearing the enhanced version with the orchestra, the very well done solos, and the ladies, wow, wow and wow! I'm guessing that this concert will be one of the most memorable in my 20 or more years with the Tower Chorale."

Calling All Dawns is in three sections: day, night, and dawn. Each section corresponds to a different phase of life: life, death, and rebirth. There are songs of joy, mystery, and hardship, reflecting the complexity of our mortality. There are songs of the deepest, darkest sorrow to accompany us through death. And finally, there are songs of triumph and exultation that bring us roaring back to life, beginning the cycle anew. Also on the program are two gorgeous songs by Daniel Elder, as well as a lovely arrangement of "Bright Morning Stars," and Rutter’s fun setting of "When the Saints Go Marching In."

Tickets are required for these concerts. For tickets and more information, visit www.towerchorale.org.
