SPEAR Petition for Prison Divestment
To President Eisgruber, members of the Princeton University Cabinet, the Princeton University Board of Trustees, and the Princeton University Investment Company,

We, the undersigned, call upon the Princeton University Investment Company to immediately and unequivocally divest Princeton’s holdings from the Prison-Industrial Complex (PIC) and work to repair the harm the university has perpetuated against those vulnerable populations targeted by the PIC through unethical investments.

In April of 2018, student organizers of Princeton Private Prison Divest (PPPD), a coalition created by engaged students on campus, were presented with a report in response to their calls for Princeton to divest from the 11 companies suggested by PPPD that seek to profit from the continual imprisonment and criminalization of Black and Brown bodies in the United States and abroad. The Resources Committee stated that “Princeton has not invested for many years — either directly or indirectly — in the 11 detention corporations, private prisons or affiliated contractors from which the student coalition recommended divestiture.” However, the same committee made no promise to completely divest from the Prison-Industrial Complex (PIC) and no pledge to refrain from investing in the PIC in the future, citing a lack of “sufficient consensus” as reason to ignore the university’s role in reinforcing the financial bedrock of a racist and classist prison system which seeks to criminalize and cage marginalized populations.

Now more than ever, it is imperative that the University divest from all companies that profit from their complicity in both private prisons and in the Prison-Industrial Complex more broadly, which is defined by Rachel Herzing as the “the overlapping interests of government and industry that use surveillance, policing, and imprisonment as solutions to what are, in actuality, economic, social, and political ‘problems’.” Despite the Resources Committee’s assurance that the University was not invested in the 11 companies PPPD indicated, we argue that Princeton’s complicity is much more sinister and subtler than was thought. While the exact investments are opaque to the university community and the public, students on campus live alongside physical manifestations of Princeton’s investment and relationship with companies identified to be part of the Prison-Industrial Complex. This includes Aramark, which caters to prisons across the nation and has also been the subject of allegations where employees sexually assaulted incarcerated individuals. Aramark is just one of many companies that profit off of the PIC excluded from the 11 corporations in the Resources Committee’s report back in 2018, but its relationship with Princeton is undeniable.

We further call attention to a university precedent for divestment from oppressive institutions, both from Apartheid in South Africa in 1995 and from Darfur in 2006, indicating that it is neither impossible nor unthinkable for the university’s investment portfolio to reflect its purported commitments and values. We also remind our university community that Princeton experienced record financial growth of the endowment in the midst of divestment from South Africa and significant growth after divestment from Darfur, even as the country slipped into recession. These instances of robust fiscal health after divestment prove that the University does not need to rely on unethical investments in order to provide for its students, faculty, and staff.

On June 22, 2020, President Christopher Eisgruber stated in a letter to the University community  that we must “confront racism honestly and effectively” and “examine all aspects of this institution—from our scholarly work to our daily operations—with a critical eye and a bias toward action.” We contend that as a university community, we must honestly confront the ways that we all benefit from the university’s investment in companies that profit off the backs of incarcerated peoples. We cannot truly claim to be “in the service of the nation and in the service of humanity” when our institution’s means for building up the leaders of tomorrow is predicated on the reinforcement of systems that seek to subjugate disenfranchised populations today.

Knowing this, we demand that you; our University President, the Princeton University Cabinet, the Princeton University Board of Trustees, and the Princeton University Investment Company; divest Princeton’s holdings from companies that profit from the prison-industrial complex and private prisons and reinvest in communities disproportionately affected by mass incarceration by doing the following:

1. Disclose Princeton’s Investments and Divest from Private Prisons and the Prison-Industrial Complex and

i. Publicly disclose and release all endowment holdings to promote transparency and foster accountability among students, faculty, alumni, and donors for maintaining ethical investments.

ii. Provide an authenticated copy of endowment holdings to the Princeton University Community, listing which of Princeton’s holdings are complicit in profiting from the Prison-Industrial Complex, prior to divestment and regularly thereafter.

iii. Pledge to never in the future invest in private prisons or the Prison-Industrial Complex and to meet yearly divestment goals, with external bodies to monitor progress and to publish reports ensuring transparency.

iv. Dissolve all formal contracts, relationships, and partnerships with companies that profit from private prisons and the Prison-Industrial Complex.

2. Rebuild and Repair the Harm and

i. Apportion a significant percentage of divested funds towards companies, organizations, and initiatives in Princeton and the greater New Jersey community that are led by people directly impacted by the prison-industrial complex.

ii. Commit to the development of a university-wide initiative to uplift the voices of those harmed by mass incarceration by creating funded academic projects (e.g. scholarships, centers, institutes, and grant programs) dedicated to the employment of formerly incarcerated individuals.

iii. Pledge to ensure all future investments are ethical and do not contradict the goals of divestment laid out above.

Signed,

Students for Prison, Education, Abolition, and Reform
