PANAMA CITY BEACH — A security guard who accidentally shot himself in the leg while on the job was charged with improper display of a firearm Friday.

Panama City Beach police said Maurice James, of Greenville, was taken to Bay Medical Center for treatment.

Police said they were called to Harley Davidson, 14700 Panama City Beach Parkway, at 11:43 a.m. Friday "in reference to an accidental shooting" and arrived to find James with a gunshot wound to his right leg. A news release said James works for DSI Security Services and was working security at the time for the upcoming Thunder Beach.

"It was also learned that James displayed the firearm in a careless manner and was not actively engaged in self-defense or the protection of another person," the news release stated, which led to the criminal charge.
