A Multifaceted Perspective on Current Approaches for High-Quality Teacher Professional Development

Thu, April 21, 11:30am to 1:00pm PDT (11:30am to 1:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Floor: Upper Level, Room 11A

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

To equip teachers with the necessary resources to address work-related challenges, research points to the importance of teacher learning through professional development (PD). Whereas PD can be realized in various formats ranging from formal (e.g., face-to-face workshop) to informal (e.g., Instagram communities) contexts, it is crucial that PD adheres to evidence-based standards of quality. This symposium assembles six papers from an international group of scholars that all address PD quality, providing critical and diverse perspectives on approaches to and assumptions about teacher learning. Notably, the papers provide a diverse look at the effectiveness of PD quality characteristics in such different formal and informal contexts by applying a variety of methodological approaches (i.e., theoretical conceptualization, systematic review, meta-analysis, empirical studies).
