Job Information

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA. 

DEPARTMENT: Public Transportation
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
LOCATION: 3600 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue

Example of Duties

The scheduler focuses on developing and managing all aspects related to fixed-route bus scheduling and service changes. Service changes may include modifying running times, adjusting trip times and schedules, route realignments, service expansion/reduction, hour of operation changes, and preparing work assignments for the bus operators. This position will also

  • Investigate and evaluate existing schedules and recommend revisions. 
  • Write, revise, and produce new schedules using scheduling software. 
  • Develop bus operator work assignments using a semi-automated process.
  • Serve as project manager for all service-related changes.
  • Coordinate with other transit divisions to ensure each service change is implemented on schedule and within budget. 
  • Prepare maps, notices, and route descriptions using GIS and other presentation software. 
  • Develop various technical reports. 
  • Meet with bus operators and conduct public meetings regarding service improvements.
  • Ensure all the rider tools and public-facing data is accurate and timely. 
  • Lead the effort to analyze the effectiveness of each service change and use the data to help inform recommendations for future service improvements. 

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Finance or similar discipline and two (2) years of experience in  transportation, transit planning, and/or urban planning.


OR
 
Associate's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Finance or similar discipline and four (4) years of experience in transportation, transit planning, and/or urban planning.

OR
 
High school diploma, GED or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in transportation, transit planning, and/or urban planning.

Preferences:
  • Previous scheduling experience.
  • Ability to maintain complex databases, perform complex arithmetic, and statistical calculations, and accurately input and interpret data.
  • Ability to interpret professional manuals, textbooks, and other materials.

Preference will be given to Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees.  AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the Department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.

Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran.
