NGD: Blazer and Henkes 12 Fret D-18
I'm sure some of you saw this guitar in the Classifieds. After a rocky start adjusting to my B&H Euphonon last year, I fell in love with the sound. Then I played a B&H OM-28 at Schoenberg and was blown away. These guys know what they're doing!
I haven't had a dreadnought-sized guitar since my Goodall Standard in 2008, but I've always admired the sound of 12 fret dreadnoughts. When this B&H came up in like-new condition, I felt like it would add something to my collection that I don't really have - a true canon with a big, rumbly bass. And that it most certainly is. With all that volume (both surface area and depth), the bass has the big boom you'd expect from a dread. The mids and trebles have a similar depth to them. They aren't as out present and projecting as you would hear in an OM, not surprisingly, but they are powerful and loud with wonderful dynamics. There is quite a bit of overtone content for a mahogany guitar. The sound does reverberate quite a bit in that big cavity. As a result, note separation isn't quite as clear as you'd get from a smaller-bodied guitar, but I think the mahogany keeps the guitar from crossing over to a point where the notes are muddled. The guitar still works exceedingly well for my fingerpicking style. With all the OMs and 000s in my collection, it's fun to finally have a big, powerful guitar with a completely different voice. One thing I will likely change, however, is the stock frets. The guitar doesn't have quite enough relief at 0.003", which means I'm in for a Plek job. Since I'm not in love with the low frets, I'll probably have EVO 55090 installed at the same time, with the relief targeted for about 0.006". Here's what I know about this guitar: Body: 12 fret dreadnought Top: Alpine spruce Back and sides: Mahogany Nut: 1 3/4" Saddle: 2 5/16" Neck: 1 piece mahogany, beefy profile with non-adjustable carbon rods Tuners: Waverly

Rudy and Willi are among the best luthiers for those seeking the vintage tone in a modern day guitar. Congrats on the score! I remember reading the term 'pillowey bass' in a description of a guitar once. The tone of the guitar in your video reminded me of that. Nice playing, and that's a hell of a guitar that you nabbed!!!! Thank you for sharing! |

There is a sweetness of tone inherent in the mahogany D 12 fret design, and oh man this guitar his it in spades. Wonderful, congrats.
