Team GENDER IS A DRAG

GRACE AND I ARE EXCITED TO SUPPORT BAY AREA G.I.R.L.S. ROCK CAMP AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Grace, a former camper, and myself are Board Members. We do this work because it is relevant, it is pressing, it is transformative for those who move experience it.

Rock Camp connects a few different VERY important pieces of community building that matter so much to us:

  • SOCIAL JUSTICE/ GENDER JUSTIC - Rock camp challenges gender norms, creates a safe environment for young people to be themselves no matter how they identify. Rock Camp asks us all to (campers and volunteers and staff) to challenge the status quo within the music industry and in our lives. From media literacy workshops to self defense, stage presence to music theory- campers are exposed to ideas and build skills they can take into their band and their everyday lives. Social Justice is Intersectional!
  • YOUTH EMPOWERMENT - Rock camp really centers the camper and encourages each individual to USE THEIR VOICEand take risks. Here are some lyrics from my band from last summer, Purple Light Squad:
    • "This is our world, this is our fight, i stay thinking about it, every night. This is our world, we can change it, can we hvae peace, love will win it. Life begins when we stand up, why cant we just learn how to love, this world has become a dangerous place, and dom't make fun of our race. Protect what you love, nothing will divide us, i cannot change but he can. i will be accepted in this world again. We've got to stand up, we have to be tsrong, trump has no place, what he says is wrong."
  • MUSIC/ THE ARTS- The arts and other forms of self-expression become tools for campers to voice their criticisms, to share their stories, to connect to others. there is no greater task and force to help move our society forward than finding  meaningful ways for people to be themselves, accept one another and music  is one of the most powerful tools that helps bridge those divides that separate us
  • COMMUNITY - BAGRC is reflective of the community. the camper population demographically reflects the east bay like few other organizations does. Nobody is turned away for lack of funds. campers connect across all the divides that normally separate them and make lasting memories and friendships with on another. it truly creates positive relationships around shared values of social justice and joy through creativity
Here is Grace's testimonial about Rock Camp:
growing up as a super anxious kid, rock camp has been one of very few spaces where i consistently feel like i can express myself freely and advocate for my own needs. being on the board is very special to me in that i get to cultivate a space where youth are supported and listened to in a way i wasn't and most youth aren't outside of rock camp. i've learned so much about team building and conflict resolution at rock camp, and as a qtpoc, learning those skills through the intersectional framework that rock camp uses has been especially validating and healthy. i have always felt very loved and cared for by the adults at rock camp and am always so excited to continue passing down that love and care to new youth!
If you can't contirbute monetarily, come volunteer this summer! Everybody has something to offer and this mission is so important.
Thank you for your support!
