NBA DNA
When the ball was tossed up at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Thursday May 29 it marked the first time that NBA teams from two countries tipped off for the title.
Until 2000, when the Vancouver Grizzlies became the first NBA team to move across the border and relocated to Graceland, there were two franchises in the Great North.
In my three stints with NBA teams I saw first hand David Stern's vision for internationalizing the future of the NBA. During the 2018-19 season 108 of 494 roster spots were filled by international players. Here's a list of the birth locations of those you will see guarding the border between the USA and Canada.
Toronto Raptors
Marc Gasol -- Spain
Serge Ibaka -- Democratic Republic of the
Congo
OG Anunoby -- United Kingdom
Chris Boucher -- Saint Lucia
Pascal Siakam -- Cameroon
GM Masa Ujiri -- Nigeria
Assistant coach -- Sergio Sariolo -- Italy
Assistant coach -- Patrick Mutombo --
Democratic Republic of the Congo
|
Golden State Warriors
Jonas Jerebko -- Sweden
Andrew Bogut -- Australia
Coach Steve Kerr -- Beirut, Lebanon
|
Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown played his high school ball in Wurzburg, Germany. Jeremy Lin is now sitting quietly on the Raptors bench. The local from Palo Alto High School and Harvard University defined the worldwide impact of the NBA during the Linsanity Days of 2012 when he was a New York Knick.
As all my northern neighbor friends like to point out, ad nauseam, it was Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian, who is credited with inventing basketball in 1891. It was David Stern and his visionary posse of global hoopheads who saw the future of World Ball.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Go ahead, say it: "Kenny, you're a genius."
As I suggested in my earlier email, the Warriors needed to go big in the middle to combat
Siakam and Gasol. So Kerr starts Cousins and spells him with Bogut. Result? A huge "W" and
now tied at 1-1 and going home to Oracle.
You're welcome, Warriors fans.

San Francisco Giants Report
San Francisco Giants second baseman Donovan Solano signs autographs before the game on Sunday, May 26 against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Oracle Park. The G-Men would fall, 6-2.
* * *
Last week San Francisco first flew to Miami to face off against the MLB-worst Marlins for a three-game series which began on Tuesday. The first game did not go well, as the Marlins tacked on eleven runs and fourteen hits to thump the Giants, 11-3.
Former San Francisco pitcher Sergio Romo chatted with manager Bruce Bochy and the Giants dugout before Wednesday's matchup and shared a hug with the skipper before he parted ways. Romo, who won three World Series championships with the Giants, put on a solid mound performance, closing out a 4-2 victory for Miami to deal the Giants a season-high
seventh straight loss.
San Francisco snapped their losing streak in Thursday's game, winning 3-1. Starting pitcher Tyler Beede backed up the winning effort in his return to the majors, tossing six innings and allowing just a single run while delivering four strikeouts. Though the Giants trailed when Beede left the game, the G-Men rallied with a go-ahead double from Brandon Crawford to mount the comeback.
The Giants next traveled to Baltimore to square up with the Orioles for a three-game weekend series. Despite putting up five runs in the first inning on Friday night, the Orioles fought back with six of their own in an electric 11-run first inning. San Francisco was ultimately dealt a 9-6 loss.
Looking to bounce back in Saturday's matchup, rookie Shaun Anderson tossed seven scoreless innings on the way to an 8-2 Giants victory. Buster Posey smacked a blast and Brandon Belt logged four RBIs in the winning effort. Before Sunday's game, manager Bruce Bochy was honored for his last appearance at Camden Yards. San Francisco continued with a strong performance, defeating the Orioles 8-1, backed by six strong innings from Jeff Samardzija and a pair of solo bombs from Brandon Crawford.
The Giants are now 24-34 and remain in last place in the NL West. They now head to New York to take on the Mets on Tuesday before returning to the Bay and squaring off with the rival Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park for a weekend series.

Oakland A's 8 vs. Los Angeles Angels 5
Oakland's fleet-footed center fielder Ramon Laureano breaks from second base and would score in the third inning on a Robbie Goodman double to tie the score at 1-1. The A's would add more runs and send the visiting Los Angeles Angels down to a 8-5 defeat on Monday, May 27

Oakland A's Report
Oakland Athletics players watch from the dugout as their teammates deal with the Los Angeles Angels on the field. The day would end with success and an 8-5 win on Monday, May 27.
* * *
The A's looked for their tenth straight win at home last week, hoping to keep up their bats hot against the visiting Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros. In Monday night's matchup with the Angels, the A's won their tenth straight victory for the first time since 2006 by a score of 8-5. Matt Chapman homered for the third straight game to help lift the A's.
The Athletics looked for their eleventh in a row on Tuesday night but fell 6-4. The Angels' Shohei Ohtani smacked a two-RBI single off of Joakim Soria to end the streak in the top of the ninth. In Wednesday's rubber match, the Athletics again fell to the Angels. Despite scoring two runs in each of the final three innings to send the game to extras, the Angels put up five runs in the top of the eleventh inning for a 12-7 victory.
The team faced off against the AL West leading Houston Astros on Friday night. Matt Chapman homered yet again with a two-run blast to put the A's up early. However, Houston caught the A's in the seventh inning and tacked on one more run in the eighth inning for a 3-2 win. On Saturday Houston's Justin Verlander dominated the A's, 5-1, as he logged his 2,807th strikeout to edge past Cy Young on the all-time strikeout list. Sunday's matchup went into extras after four solo homers from Jurickson Profar, Robbie Grossman, Ramón Laureano, and Matt Chapman but the A's gave up two in the top of the twelfth inning to lose their fifth straight, 6-4. In the games ahead, the A's will look to clean up their bullpen which has been make-or-break for them
all season.
Oakland hits the road for nine games starting Tuesday in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels and look to improve upon their 29-30 record and a third place standing in the AL West.
They next head to Arlington to take on the Texas Rangers for the weekend set.

Baby and bridal showers are common rites of passage -- so why not host a college shower to mark a major milestone in a young person's life? On Friday, May 31 Girls Inc. of Alameda County showered 28 graduating girls with the essentials they'll need for a successful transition to college. Capping the two-year college readiness program at Girls Inc., College Access Now!, the College Shower rewards graduates with computers, classroom supplies, luggage, and dorm essentials, like bedding. Hosted by Clif Bar & Company, with support from the Oakland Raiders, the event took place at the Clif Bar headquarters in Emeryville. Raiderettes were on hand to help distribute gifts. Sonoma Raceway's 50th anniversary book cover
SONOMA, Calif. (May 31, 2019) -- To honor 50 years of racing history in the Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Raceway has released its limited-edition 50th anniversary book.
The photo-filled memoir chronicles the raceway's history over five decades, including its tumultuous early years, emergence on the national racing scene and transformation following its purchase by Speedway Motorsports, Inc. in the mid-1990s. The book includes highlighted sections on the raceway's modernization in the late 1990s and its community involvement.
The book relied heavily on extensive research and writing by motorsports historian Gary Horstkorta, as well as editing and design by Llew Kinst and photography support by
Allan Rosenberg.
"Developing this book was a key part of our celebration of the raceway's first half-century and all of the amazing events and personalities who have been part of that history," said Steve Page, Sonoma Raceway president and general manager. "We are very pleased with how it turned out and eternally grateful to Llew, Allan, Gary and our staff for the countless hours of research and archiving that went into it."
The 50th anniversary book will be available for purchase for $30 at Wine Country Motorsports, located at the raceway, as well as raceway merchandise stands during major event weekends.

Sports Prep Star -- Zoie Hartman
Monte Vista-Danville - Swimming - Senior
Zoie Hartman, the Georgia-bound senior, closed out her high school career with six gold medals in May. That included four North Coast Section titles -- the 200-yard individual medley, the 100 breaststroke, and two freestyle relay wins -- along with repeat CIF gold performances in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. At the NCS meet, Hartman set a new 200 IM record with a finals time of 1 minute, 55.76 seconds. It was a mark that was more than four-tenths of a second faster than the previous record of 1:56.17 held by Olympic medalist Maya DiRado. DiRado set her record swimming for Maria Carrillo High-Santa Rosa in 2010. The Monte Vista girls swimming team won the overall NCS title behind Hartman's four medals. She will be swimming in the USA Swimming Senior Nationals at Stanford University this summer. Photo: Chace Bryson.
