Elderly were abandoned to Covid. We must see no repeat

The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic is with us, as is the return of life under more onerous restrictions. Daily hospital admissions are now exceeding 1,000, while deaths within 28 days of a positive test are now averaging nearly 200 a day. Things are not yet as bad as they were in the spring, making it doubly important that we learn the lessons of what happened then.

Today, our Insight investigation lifts the lid on what was going on in our hospitals during the first phase of the pandemic. Many elderly patients died from the coronavirus after they were not prioritised for treatment.
