Romanian open-access rail freight operator E-P Rail has ordered four Smartrons, while Bulgaria’s PIMK is set to receive three units. The 25kV 50Hz locomotives will be equipped with the PZB train control system.

Based on the successful Vectron platform, the Smartron concept is based on standard preconfigured locomotive, with only one version being produced.

The Smartron has been available in the German market since March 2018 and more than 25 units have been ordered so far. Operators include Eisenbahngesllschaft Potsdam (four units) Infraleuna (one unit) Eisenbahngesellschaft Ostfriesland-Oldenburg (one unit), EVB (one unit), BBL Logistik (one unit) and Spitzke Logistik (one unit).

Paribus Group placed a framework order with Siemens for up to 25 Smartrons in 2018 and the firm’s locomotive leasing subsidiary Northrail has agreed to lease three units to TX Logistik and three to RTB Cargo.
