How many acres does the average farmer own in Wisconsin?

Avian Flu Impacts 18 WI Counties

As highly pathogenic avian influenza continues to be found in wild and domestic birds throughout the state, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is reminding flock owners to use enhanced biosecurity measures to keep the disease from their flocks.

This includes washing hands, disinfecting equipment, restricting access to birds, and separating new birds from existing flocks for at least 30 days. Poultry owners are asked, when possible, to keep their birds indoors.

The most recent HPAI detections were Nov. 4 in Marathon and Waukesha counties and Oct. 17 in St. Croix County.

A total of 29 farms have been affected in Wisconsin in a total of 18 counties. Nationally, 259 commercial flocks and 347 backyard flocks have been impacted. Forty-six states have had at least one confirmed infected flock.

Vilsack visit uplifts meat processing investment

CADOTT, Wis. — U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Ambassador Susan Rice, White House Domestic Policy Advisor, were in the Chippewa Valley Nov. 3 promoting investments in regional meat processing.

Farmers, media and rural leaders gathered at Crescent Meats in Cadott to learn more about the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program and the area’s designation as a Rural Partners Network community. The visit followed a Nov. 2 announcement that the Biden-Harris Administration is investing $73 million in 21 grant projects through the first round of the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP). The effort to bolster meat and poultry processing capacity aims to increase competition, support producer income, and strengthen the food supply chain to lower costs for working families.

Nominate a Farmer today!

Supporting and recognizing farmers and agriculturists has always been a priority for Culver’s. They strive to create programs that do just that while also benefiting FFA chapters which are the future of the agriculture industry.

Alison Demmer, Public Relations Manager at Culver’s, shares more about their new farmer appreciation program, To Farmers With Love.

The To Farmers With Love program is a way of appreciating farmers as we continue through harvest season. It is an opportunity for individuals to nominate a farmer in their life to win a prize package.

“We created this project because we are always looking for ways to show our gratitude and appreciation for farmers,” says Demmer. “We’ve been doing this since 2013 and this year we opened it up for a longer period of time as To Farmers With Love runs from November 1-15, 2022.”

International organizations scale up fight against deadly livestock disease

ROME — Veterinary experts from around the world attended an event at the Rome headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to mark the publication of a book celebrating the eradication of rinderpest and to launch the next phase of the global fight against peste des petits ruminants (PPR), also known as sheep and goat plague.

The world was declared free of rinderpest, a viral disease that primarily affected cattle and buffalo, in 2011. Co-authored by FAO and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, founded as OIE), the book reviews the scientific expertise and activities during decades of eradication efforts, the contributions made by numerous UN agencies and other international organizations, as well as the outstanding role played by national veterinary services.
