Buffy Filippell, founder of TeamWork Consulting, has been honored for her vision and success.

Buffy Filippell, Sports Business Journal Champion
|
Buffy Filippell, the founder of TeamWork Consulting, has been a force of nature in fast forwarding proactive progress in the business of sports. She was recently honored as a 2019 member of Sports Business Journal's Champions: Pioneers and Innovators in Sports Business.
This is equivalent to the Hall of Fame for Sports Business. Many of us have been lucky enough to spend our lives working for teams, leagues, media organizations, professional tours, agencies, venues, governing bodies, startups, foundations, schools and conferences.
Buffy has devoted her career to building, innovating, nurturing, and teaching the development of the sports industry's most critical component, it's people. She is a PhD in personnel. Buffy is the Joanie Appleseed of planting and promoting the past, current, and future generations of leaders in every sector of sports.
In 1987 TeamWork Consulting launched the first retained executive search firm dedicated to sports. TeamWork also created the first online recruiting tool for sports which has placed over 100,000 candidates, many who are first-time sports job careerists.
Buffy was the first to customize the concept of sports career job fairs. TeamWork was a beacon of diversity before glass ceilings and closed doors were shattered. Buffy sprinted forward in the business of sports by navigating through the windshield, rather than the rear view mirror, decades before GPS, analytics, metrics or algorithms.
Her unparalleled nuclear network of sports careerists never stops growing. Resumes be damned. Her heart, soul and institutional knowledge maximizes their passion, skill set, education, life-work balance, upward mobility, opportunity and bank balances.
The seeds of innovation planted by Buffy Filippell have matured into a powerful engine of institutions and individuals that are crafting the future leaders of the sports industry.

In a novel twist for Major League Baseball, the Oakland A's and Seattle Mariners will open the 2019 MLB season by playing a two-game set in Japan on March 20-21. Both games will count in the standings and will be considered as 'road' games for the Mariners and as 'home' games for the A's. The A's thirty-three-year-old right-hander Mike Fiers will make his first Opening Day start on Wednesday and Marco Estrada will start on Thursday. Fiers was 12-8 in the 2018 season with a 3.56 ERA, and Estrada was 7-14 with a 5.24 ERA. Both games begin at 2:35 AM PDT
and will be broadcast on ESPN.

Oakland A's -- Spring Training Report
3/2/19 HoHoKam Park: Mesa, AZ. A's pitchers throwing Side Pieces in the early morning.
The Athletics had a short two-game week of Spring Training, as they were rained out against the Padres on Tuesday and left for Tokyo on Thursday. During a 6-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Monday night, starting lefty pitcher Brett Anderson gave up three earned runs in 3.1 IP on five hits and a home run. RHP Chris Bassitt allowed three earned runs in 4 IP on five hits and two home runs, but struck out five batters.
Somewhat surprisingly, before the game the Athletics optioned RHP Daniel Mengden to Triple-A, taking advantage of his fourth Minor League option year. This move will require Mengden to sit out for the first ten games of the regular season. Though he did not have an outstanding spring, with a 5.73 ERA in 11 innings, Mengden was one of the Athletics' most reliable pitchers towards the end of last season, with a 2.52 ERA in the last 25 innings he pitched.
Wednesday's game against the Cubs resulted in a 12-11 victory for the A's, backed by home runs from Chad Pinder and Nick Hundley, as well as a strong performance from rising star third baseman Matt Chapman. Frankie Montas was awarded the win, allowing zero runs on 4 IP with five strikeouts, lowering his spring ERA to 0.69.
The Athletics took on the Nippon Ham Fighters in an exhibition game early Sunday, earning a 5-1 victory on 11 hits and facing a new style of play and fan interaction from the Japanese club. With constant cheering, chanting, and drum-beating, Japanese baseball games are a different experience from MLB games for both fans and players because of their high-energy environment. A second game against the Nippon Ham Fighters ended in a 6-6 tie. The A's face the Seattle Mariners in Tokyo for Opening Day on Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21. The games will be broadcast on ESPN at 2:35 AM PDT on ESPN.

San Francisco Giants -- Spring Training Report
San Francisco had another seven-game week of Spring Training, beginning with a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. Giants top prospect and catcher Joey Bart had a strong showing, lifting the Giants to victory with a three-run double in the ninth inning to break a 1-1 draw. The 22-year-old was selected second overall by the Giants in 2018, and though he will play in San Jose with the Giants' Class A Advanced team in 2019, he is a force to watch
in the coming season.
The Giants won back-to-back games with a 4-2 win against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, credited to Madison Bumgarner, who struck out four and allowed two earned runs on seven hits over five innings. San Francisco dropped Wednesday's game against Seattle. with both Derek Holland and Tyler Beede giving up four runs. The Giants' 3-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday went to pitcher Dereck Rodriguez, who allowed one earned run in 4.2 innings. Friday's bout against the Angels ended in a 5-5 tie and was supported by a solid outing from Jeff Samardzija. This game experimented with a new MLB Spring Training rule which places a runner on second base at the beginning of the ninth inning in a Spring Training game. Nevertheless, the game ended in a tie off a composed performance from RHP Trevor Gott.
The Giants closed the weekend with a 10-3 split-squad win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday and a 7-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, improving the Giants' Cactus League record to 9-12. San Francisco has six more Spring Training games this coming week, then returns to the Bay Area on Sunday, March 24, to face the Oakland Athletics at the Coliseum
to begin a three-game transbay series.

Oakland Raiders -- Antonio Brown

Brown was acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for the Raiders' 2019 third and fifth round draft picks. Last season, Brown hauled in 104 passes for 1,297 yards and led the league in touchdown receptions for the first time with a career high and Steelers' single-season record of 15 receiving scores. Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for wide receiver Antonio Brown, attended the press conference and had this to say earlier regarding dealing with the Raiders Mike Mayock, "Mayock is a talented general manager and a tough negotiator. He did a good job. You would've thought he was a veteran NFL general manger. He was very sharp and very professional." Sacramento Kings 129 vs. Chicago Bulls 102
The Sacramento Kings, still maintaining slim playoff hopes, dispatched the visiting Chicago Bulls in emphatic fashion on Sunday night, 129-102. By halftime the contest was pretty much decided as the Kings shot out to a 16 point lead, which only grew. Sonoma Raceway -- Sonoma Drags & Drift returns
Sonoma Drags & Drift returns for another season of sideways drifting and quarter-mile action
SONOMA, Calif. (March 11, 2019) -- Sonoma Drags & Drift, powered by Universal Technical Institute (UTI), has returned to Sonoma Raceway for another season of sideways drifting and quarter-mile action.
The popular program features amateur drag racing on the drag strip, while Sonoma Drift hosts drifting behind the main grandstands and on the road course, most Wednesday nights
through November 14.
For more than 30 years, the Wednesday Night Drags program has given local drivers a safe, legal and controlled environment to race their cars on the raceway's quarter-mile drag strip. Anyone with a driver license and a car that passes a simple tech inspection is invited to compete at Wednesday Night Drags. The cost for students with a valid high school ID is only $15;
$25 for all other competitors.
While the drag strip rumbles with racing, Sonoma Drift brings white smoke and sideways cars onto the skid pad just yards away. Drifting is a driving competition held worldwide, which is judged on speed, angle, showmanship and line taken through a set course,
rather than who finishes first.
Each Sonoma Drift event is limited to 40 competitors per week and usually sells out. Drivers should pre-register online; entry fee is $40. There is no on-site registration available. For more information, visitwww.sonomaraceway.com/events/sonoma-drift/
Wednesday Night Drags begins at 3:30 p.m. with eliminations starting at 6:30 p.m. Sonoma Drift runs from 6-10 p.m. Wednesday Night Drags and Sonoma Drift are great spectator events. Spectator admission is just $10, while kids 12 and under get in FREE and parking is FREE.

Sports Prep Star -- Morgan Dunbar
Oakland High-Oakland -- Basketball -- Senior
Morgan Dunbar delivered team-highs in both points (20) and steals (6) as Oakland High defeated McFarland to win the program's first CIF State Basketball title on March 8. The Wildcats led 9-8 after the first quarter and never trailed on their way to a 51-35 triumph in the Division III final at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center. Defense wins championships, and Oakland proved it. The Wildcats had 19 steals as a team and forced McFarland into 28 turnovers. Dunbar scored 11 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to help put the game away. She also added four rebounds to her effort. The state title was only the third ever for a girls team from the Oakland Athletic League. The last one belonged to Oakland Tech in 2005. Photo credit:

Reigning in our hopes
By Howard Pearlstein
The Golden State Warriors seemed snakebit off and on most of this year. But, as with the little girl with the curl on her forehead, when they've been good -- like most recently against the Denver Nuggets -- they've been very, very good. And when they're bad -- like against the Phoenix Suns -- they're horrid.
And we fans, regardless of the fact that hundreds and thousands of things make up the world in which the seasons' games are played, we still expect them to hit the same mark they did in earlier years, when in reality things have changed.
The fact that they've done it so well so many times just makes us more demanding. We don't often take into account that their success makes them a target for every other team, especially the bad ones, because while the bad teams may not go to the playoffs, beating the Dubs is as good as it gets, so they put it ALL in.
What I mean is it's easy to SAY, "Threepeat," but saying it and doing it are two different things. Despite sprained ankles and bruised everything and season-ending injuries happening and playing 20 extra games last year and the year before and longer seasons and shorter recovery time, that threepeat still has to take place on the court, 12 minutes at a time.
So let's not get greedy, because these guys ARE top level professionals and so are the other NBA players.
BUT...
Something I realized before watching the Houston game -- there's a big difference between the Dubs and all the other NBA teams: The Dubs KNOW they can do it, take it all.
The other teams? Some are pretty sure they can, others not so sure but willing to go for it, play it all the way.
But none of them KNOW it, because they haven't already done it year-after-year and know HOW they did it and EXACTLY what it took.
Meaning...
All the rest are trying to figure out what it will take.
The Dubs are trying to remember what it took.
And then I watched the game and realized it's in there, they still have it, just needs a little more dusting off, shining up, and oiling the creaky joints.
And we need to remember this:
It ain't over till the Point Guard shimmies!
