 How will you spell SEPTEMBER?
S – SURPRISE – Look for the Lord’s grace-filled surprises around you!
E – EncourAGE - The younger and older to support and encourage each other!
P – PRESENCE – Be present to talk, affirm and “hug” your loved ones, finding new ways to “hug” and “high-five”! How about bringing back the custom of “bowing”?
T – TWEET – Tweet others as you want to be tweeted!
E – ENGAGE – With others, through phone, e-mail, Zoom – especially those who may need someone to hear from
M – MEMORIES – Take time to thank God for the many merry memories of the past. It will empower us to move into the future, with Him!
B – BE - A Yay-Sayer instead of a Nay-Sayer! “It’s tough “out there” but the Lord is still loving, forgiving, and guiding.
E – ELECTIONS – Be involved, share your ideas and concerns, and VOTE – but do not get “over-powered” by all the rhetoric and ranting. Keep looking and clinging to the things Jesus said and did and then compare them to what you are hearing from the various candidates.  Let the Lord lead and guide you!
R – REACH OUT – To the lonely, the lost, the least, the younger and the older. We all need support and human connections now more than ever!
HAVE A SOOTHING SEPTEMBER, in the Lord!

The Coronavirus in Limerick
By Pastor Bob Zimmer

1. It came as a thief in the night
The virus so sneaky and slight.
    It started out small
    Even though it would stall.
But it was determined to strike.

2. Some were anxious to call it a hoax,
    The macho and skeptical blokes.
But they soon lost their zeal
When they saw it was real.
And became the butt of some jokes!

3. We were all asked to keep social
    distance,
To which there was major resistance.
    Some hated the task
    Of wearing a mask,
    So, the virus maintained its
    persistence.

4. Be strong and resist the temptation
    To ignore the best information.
    Be wise as an owl
    Or you may run afoul
And be handed a "Covid Citation"!

5. Now don't sit around and just mope.
Look for ways that will help you to cope.
Call a friend, write a note,
    Either one gets my vote;
Something nice that will help give them
    hope!

Rich and Haz are a marvelous blend
Loving years they together did spend.
This occasion is weighty
Arriving at eighty,
And we're honored to have them as friend!

Monthly Mighty Mentor Article

NOW WHAT?

Not too long ago, one of our granddaughters asked us how we felt about being old. We were taken aback, of course, because we don’t think of ourselves as “OLD.”  We explained that it was an interesting question, and we would think about it, and let her know.

According to statistics, we are old. We live in a culture that worships youth. Staying young is a billion dollar a year business. As persons of faith we have been called to modify the trajectory that reflects negative cultural attitudes toward aging.

Our granddaughter’s question made us do some reflective thinking, about our own aging.   Not the simple passage of time, but about what has given us a fulfilling life.

Looking back at the course of our personal lives, we can say with confidence that we have been blessed. We have angels, who have silently steered and marked our life’s path. Friends and family have taught us to be intentional and give witness to living a gracious, generous and grateful life. Age represents the wealth of life experiences that shaped who we have become.

While we still have the opportunity to work in God’s vineyard, we cannot waste time lamenting over what has been, or could have been, or worrying about what will be.  We have been called to be bold and embrace God’s blessings and be deliberate about seeking out opportunities for ministry in our personal and community lives. We should be able to eat dessert every single day and twice on Sunday.

So, to answer our granddaughter’s question, old age is a gift, a privilege denied to many, so let’s not waste it.

FULL OF YEARS continues into its third year as the blog site for BOB SITZE, retired ELCA staff member, author and twig collector.  Bob has dedicated his short, 300-word bursts of observation to the notion that our later years are “full”—brimming with blessings, emotions and devotional thoughts. He continues to find unique and sometimes-whimsical viewpoints about current events and purposed faith in his later years. Visit the site at www.fullofyears.org. You can also receive the blogs as they are posted. (Directions are included at the end of each blog.)
