You may be unfamiliar with his name, but you have likely come across Frederick Dally’s striking images of British Columbia in the 1860s. Many of Dally’s photographs were reproduced as engravings in the popular press of the time. They helped to introduce to a wider audience the rugged and dramatic landscape and the unique life of the gold seeker in Britain’s far-flung north-western colony. Dally was only active in British Columbia from 1866 through 1870, yet his photos provide us with an enduring impression of the landscape and culture of the pre confederation years in the province. Royal BC Museum & BC Archives conservator Lauren Buttle has been preparing the Dally Albums for exhibit and will discuss Dally’s process, as well as the conservation and display of his photographs, most of which survive today in 19th century photo albums.
