Milestone in N.Y. virus tests
New York set a new daily record with 102,900 coronavirus tests and just two deaths, Gov. Cuomo said Saturday.
There were 849 new positive COVID-19 cases on Friday — a positivity rate of about 0.8% — marking more than a month of test rates below 1% in the Empire State.
“The more testing you do, the more accurate a picture of the virus’ spread you have,” Cuomo said.
“It helps the state make informed decisions to protect the welfare of New Yorkers, and helps them make informed decisions for themselves.”
Two people in the state died from coronavirus on Friday and no one from New York City died — a remarkable statistic considering the horrifying toll the pandemic took on the area in the spring.
The positivity rate in the five boroughs was 0.7%, a number that has also remained low and stable for several weeks.
For now, there is little sign of serious spikes that some feared would accompany the reopening of colleges and universities.
Dr. Anthony Fauci and other public health experts have warned the nation to expect the virus to make a dramatic comeback as the weather cools down in the northern part of the country.
