Use FOI for accountability

Nigerian journalists should be prepared to use the Freedom of Information law to hold politicians accountable for their electoral promises.

The Media Rights Agenda (MRA) made the observation while commending the National Assembly for passing the harmonized version of the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill.

The media group urged President Goodluck Jonathan not to delay in assenting to the bill.

MRA’s director of campaigns, Tive Denedo, said an FOI law will deepen democracy by serving as a useful tool for the media to monitor the performance of elected politicians.
