....when every time somebody mentions PC gaming, the response from
everyone here is "the Xbox is way cheaper than a PC". That statement is
obviously very true but false at the same time. But what you guys don't
realize is that if you are posting in this newsgroup, then you already have
a computer. Also a personal computer is almost a must for everybody in
America. Most people have them. It doesn't limit you just to gaming. So
as long as you are posting to this newsgroup, you can play a game. Your
computer was an investment to do many things on. Most people buy them with
gaming at the bottom of the list as far as why they are buying their
computer. So don't call a PC a "$1500 gaming console". That is just plain
stupid.
You buy a car to drive it, and to transport yourself to certain
destinations. You don't buy a car to play games in. But you can. Same
thing with a PC. You buy it for the versatility it offers for everyday
life. You don't buy it usually just for gaming. And you also don't have to
buy a $2,000 or $3,000 dollar HDTV to get good quality resolution. So in
reality all you need is a decent video card to get even better results than
an Xbox or any other console can offer for that matter. With a decent video
card (which are very affordable right now ex. Geforce 3 which is completely
capable still of offering top of the line graphics), you are set to go. Yes
a decent sound card would be even better, but even with an average one, you
can get just as good of sound as a normal TV can put out. And if you want
to splurge on Dolby Digital 5.1, then it's readily and affordably available
for a PC. The Creative Inspire 5.1 Dolby Digital speaker package, and the
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer both retail for $99.99 a piece. Simple
math brings that to just $199.98 for a complete Dolby Digital 5.1 package.
Whereas with a home console, you have to invest hundreds and hundreds
of dollars just to get decent Dolby Digital 5.1 quality. You know how
expensive a good receiver can cost. $300, 400, and above. Anyways my point
is that you can play better quality games, at just as low, or lower of a
price dollar for dollar as a home console system. Especially if you paid
$299 for the Xbox, which most of you here did already. Because if you
factor in $299 for the system, $35 a piece for controllers, $50 for Xbox
Live, who knows how much for the TV you are playing it on (especially if you
have a big HDTV or something), $50 a pop for games (whereas PC games are
usually lower depending on the developer etc..), and who knows how much for
a nice Dolby Digital 5.1 setup (upwards of $500 or $600 for an average
sounding package), you are really spending just as much or way more than a
juiced up PC.
Also with PC's, any decent $250 to $400 monitor can output just as good
or in most cases better resolution for gaming than a $2,000 or $3,000 TV can
for the Xbox. So why spend all this money to make your Xbox look good, when
a few simple and affordable upgrades to the same computer you are sitting
there reading this post on can make it look even better for little cost???
Yes I understand the whole portability, and sitting on a recliner deal. But
that is just stupidity. I don't mind sitting on a nice chair in front of my
computer. And yes I can't play games on a 60" inch screen, but I can play
games at an even better 1600x1200 crisp and clean resolution than most TV's
can offer. All in all, the overly used "PC's are expensive gaming machines"
phrase holds no water. Can you surf the net on your Xbox??? Can you use
Microsoft Word to finish school and business needs on your Xbox??? Can you
do your taxes on your Xbox??? Can you buys things online or do online
banking with your Xbox??? Can you download and play music, videos, etc..
with your Xbox??? Can you create graphics and webpages with your Xbox???
Can you email to anywhere in the world for free with your Xbox??? Can you
hook up a scanner, printer or digital camera to your Xbox??? Get the point
yet????????
So it just isn't fair to compare a now $199 dollar one dimensional
system, to a MULTI faceted system. Because like I said, when all said and
done you are paying just as much or way more to play your Xbox with the same
experience you can get from a PC (i.e. clean and crisp graphics at 1600x1200
which TV's can't handle, decent Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and 99% of the time
free online play, bigger games because of the big hard drives in PC's now
days). Thank you for reading my novel!

Counterpoint. I have a Dolby Digital receiver and a nice TV already for use
with my home theater. I didn't have to pay anything extra for them because
I already had them before I had my Xbox. True most people do have a PC
especially if they are posting to this group but not all PCs are equipped to
handle games. Keeping up to date with the latest graphics cards can be
quite an expensive task as well. I do enjoy PC games personally but I do
draw a distinct line between PC games and console games.

In my opinion, one area where the PC has never been able to best the console
is in the "friends" situation. You have a few friends over and whether it's
a fighting game or a sports game, the PC can't beat plugging in three extra
controllers and battling it out. True that a decent monitor will make PC
games look great, if you want to play your games on a larger screen, console
is the way to go. 32 Sony Vega or something comparable is absolutely
awesome for gaming.

Just my opinions though,

Ben

I respect your opinions Ben, and it is nice to see that it seems like you
respect mine. I expected all kinds of hating going on just for speaking my
opinions. But point well taken on the Dolby Digital and TV. In some cases
though (especially in this newsgroup), people bought a new TV and or Dolby
Digital system for their Xbox. Now granted most people didn't, but that
makes the Xbox investment pretty pricey. Also I understand your video card
comment, but like I said in my original post, you can buy a decent card and
get high performance. The human eye difference between a Geforce 4 and a
Geforce 3 for example is not big at all. Technically they are different,
but to the naked eye, there is no difference. And also not many games even
support Geforce 4 technology, let alone Geforce 3 technology.
Even a Geforce 2 Ultra could run a game just fine. But basically you can
get a Geforce 3 or Geforce 3MX for under $200. I haven't kept up on prices,
but probably even under $100 now, especially the MX's. And those cards will
run games more than fine. So really if you add that to the PC you already
own, you are ready to go. A decent sound card would help too, and decent
ones are well under $100 now. So playing PC games at a high quality level
is not as much as people might think. Especially now days with all the
advances in technology, and price drops.
I also understand your "friends" idea. I guess I never mention that because
I never usually have friends over to play games. Mostly we will play
online, or if we do play at home, it's very rare. Some of my friends aren't
even into the gaming scene. But you have a good point there. Yeah a 32"
Vega is nice, but to me a 19" 1600x1200 gaming experience is second to none.
Just my opinon though. =o)

For me, this is what it comes down to...

Like you stated, I already have a PC (several at home and several at work).
My best system at home is a 300MHz P2 dual-processor system with 320MB RAM
and an older Voodoo3 video card. Not much of a gaming system by todays
standards, but with the dual-processor setup it compiles and multi-tasks
like nobody's business. The fact of the matter is, I will be getting
Morrowind for the Xbox, and if I tried to run it on my current PC, I'd be in
sad shape. Buying a new one is pointless when the one I already have suits
my normal PC needs just fine (and upgrading it is impossible.) I will
likely build a new one by the end of the year (maybe sooner), but the video
card will be geared more for video capture and editing purposes. I know
what you are saying though as I've been an online PC gamer for several years
now. But for me the constant upgrading gets too expensive, and at least
with my consoles (PS2, GC, Xbox) I can spend more time with my wife and
friends (and less time sitting in my office alone). When console games come
online, they will be the best of both worlds, IMO.

On the other hand it takes a real ass to be stupid enough to use only part
of the quote for justification.

The quote had qualifiers in it, not in the end, where a cut might have even
been slightly understandable, but in the middle. In fact that is not a
quote of me at all.

Oh sorry, you must be a journalisim major.

Waiting for an answer?? I have this thing called a life, and I was doing a

don't sit here waiting for a response. You never posted anything to get a

Why in the world would an ass that always replies to my posts, keep doing it
when I think you are an idiot as it is??? Also you forgot your question
mark in your response genius. If the post doesn't relate to you, then don't
respond. It's simple as that. Also your response has nothing to do with my
original post, so what was the point of it??? And just because I no longer
own an Xbox, that doesn't mean I am not allowed to post here. I have had
the Xbox experience, so I feel I am qualified to give my opinions. And I
posted about PC gaming compared to console because it has been brought up a
lot in here. Just reply to stuff relevant to you moron. I am flattered
that I was important enough for you to respond. Because the response you
gave was personal and had nothing to do with the post. What a scholar you
must be. Nice. Later.

You respond to my posts regularly too, and none of them make any sense. If
you actually were educated enought to read my original post from start to
finish, you would see some valid points in there. But since you can't read
it all, you just respond with an easy "you talk a lot; and it's all
bullshit". That is just a lazy way out of reading it. Also if my post
didn't interest you, then why reply???????

Correction on "enought", I meant enough. Just catching myself before you
say something like "look at what an idiot you are mispelling things".
Because that is expected from a no life moron like yourself who has nothing
better to do but analyze all my posts.

For someone with a "life" as you like to call it, you sure do spend alot of
time trolling here and making a fool of yourself. Sorry pal, if you had any
sort of life you wouldn't care that people are into the Xbox or are really
excited about the upcoming Xbox Live service, nor would you care to tell
people that you sold your Xbox. Let it go, its over, chalk this up as a
learning experience so as not to make a fool of yourself again in a public
forum. Later.

yes, odd thing that. he should be out making good use of his B.A. in
advertising -- wrangling a 6-figure salary, balancing a girfriend or
two, gambling in monte carlo.

yet, he's in a video game newsgroup posting shit like this:

Having a computer and having a computer capable of playing the latest
internet capable video games are two completely different things. My
machine of choice at home is a 233 Mhz iMac with 256 MB RAM and 6MB
video memory. It does everything I want a computer to do and I'm not
going to spend $2000 to play the latest games when I could spend a
fraction of that on consoles.

As of right now for $2000 I could get one top of the line PC or an
Xbox, PS2, GameCube and 29 games. Hmmm... I wonder? Go one better and
say an XBox or PS2 and 36 games or a GameCube and 37 games. Assuming
$50 per game.
