Michelle Alfano gearing up for a creative year Michelle Alfano, novelist and full-time senior research officer at the University of Toronto, is preparing for a busy 2019. She and former Canadian poet laureate George Elliott Clarke are organizing the fourth annual Love Poetry Festival this July. The event features new and established poets reading the works of Milton Acorn and Gwendolyn MacEwen, as well as their own poetry. Alfano is also hard at work on two new novels. “I am happier – and more productive – when I’m busy,” she says. “The plot of Destiny, think of me while you sleep revolves around a young woman who becomes intrigued with a homeless man who strongly resembles a former lover who has passed away,” she explains. In We Were Like You, Alfano explores the life of Sicilian bandit Salvatore Giuliano. So how does she find time to write with such a busy schedule? “I have a very particular routine when I start a new project. I treat it like a job and commit to writing 500 words every day first thing in the morning (whether good or bad I try not to judge the work at that stage) until I have a sizeable section of the new work. I then edit over lunch hours when I have time. I can’t sit around waiting for the muse to inspire me – that process doesn’t work for me.” Alfano credits her literary growth to her taste for classic novelists such as Virginia Woolf and Leo Tolstoy, and non-fiction writers like Oriana Fallaci and Joan Didion. As for contemporary colleagues, she admires the work of Nino Ricci and Caterina Edwards. Alfano has her own share of admirers, to be sure. Ricci blurbed about her novella Made Up of Arias, which won the Bressani Award in 2010. Her most recent book, The Unfinished Dollhouse: A Memoir of Gender and Identity, was named one of The Globe and Mail’s 100 Best Books of the Year in 2017. She’s grateful for the positive media attention. “I think it helped ‘normalize’ my family’s and the public’s response to the book,” she says.

Michelle Alfano, scrittrice e ricercatrice senior a tempo pieno all’Università di Toronto, si prepara per un 2019 pieno di impegni. Lei e l’ex poetessa laureata canadese George Elliott Clarke stanno organizzando il quar to festival annuale Love Poetry Festival che si terrà a luglio. Par teciperanno all’evento poeti esordienti e affermati che leggeranno le opere di Milton Acorn e Gwendolyn MacEwen, nonché le loro stesse poesie. Alfano sta inoltre lavorando sodo a due nuovi romanzi. “Sono più contenta – e più prolifica – quando sono occupata,” dice.“La trama di Destiny, think of me while you sleep è incentrata su una giovane donna che si sente affascinata da un senzatetto, il quale assomiglia fortemente ad un suo ex amato ora defunto,” spiega. In We Were Like You, Alfano esplora la vita del bandito siciliano Salvatore Giuliano. Come fa quindi a trovare il tempo di scrivere con delle giornate così piene di impegni? “Ho una routine molto particolare quando inizio un nuovo progetto. Lo considero un lavoro e mi impegno a scrivere 500 parole al giorno, al mattino, prima di qualsiasi altra cosa (in questa fase, indipendentemente dal risultato, più o meno buono, cerco di astenermi da qualunque giudizio) fino ad avere una porzione considerevole della nuova opera. Passo poi a rivedere e correggere durante le pause pranzo, quando ho tempo. Non riesco a starmene seduta ad aspettare la musa ispiratrice – non fa per me.” Alfano attribuisce la sua crescita letteraria al suo interesse per scrittori classici quali Virginia Woolf e Leo Tolstoy, e a scrittori di saggistica come Oriana Fallaci e Joan Didion. Tra i contemporanei ammira l’opera di Nino Ricci e Caterina Edwards. Alfano ha sicuramente molti ammiratori. Ricci ha scritto una recensione sulla sua novella Made Up of Arias, che ha vinto il Bressani Award nel 2010. Il suo ultimo libro, The Unfinished Dollhouse: A Memoir of Gender and Identity, è stato nominato uno dei 100 Migliori Libri dell’Anno 2017 da The Globe and Mail.
