Sometimes it's also the only way for a poor noble family to afford a replacement 'Mech after the golden child gets shot out of the family Stinger playing mercenary.

Secondborn scapegoat's gotta go sign up with the AFFS as an infantryman in the hopes that he'll capture a Panther the next time House Kurita comes knocking.

Also if it's after 3050 and you're super loving jacked you might get picked to be in the battle armor corps. That seems pretty bragable to me, you get to wear a robot suit that lets you blast around on rocket engines and your two main jobs are tearing into people's cockpits or being a basically unstoppable building-clearing machine. I would definitely spend a lot of time chasing people through factories, except this time I wouldn't let them squish me in a hydraulic press.

And we've just seen what BattleArmor does to regular infantry. And this is with me giving infantry an edge in the form of semi-usable armor (and forgetting to type their weapons so they do full damage to everything, whoops :saddowns: ).

Battle Armor can and should change the tactical situation dramatically. Mechs fear going into urban terrain, now they fear it even more.

The Taurians believe in infantry. Capellans pretty much have to enlist for groundpounder duty if they're a commoner and want to earn citizenship.

House Kurita knows the infantry is where all the nobility's really terrible failsons wind up and give their infantry extremely flammable synthetic fiber uniforms without body armor.

Battle armored infantry generally do okay, they have the luxury of having a very clear "you are about to die" point. For a tanker, though, that poo poo is a constant hunter. Fighter pilots, I think, probably don't survive ejecting all the time, but acting like you don't care about that kind of thing is probably a prerequisite for being a fighter pilot.

Not even gonna get into what being foot infantry is like.

Inner Sphere fighter pilots are certifiably insane. It's like, the one area of expertise where the Inner Sphere has the clear edge over the Clan. They might be genetically engineered to have quicker reflexes and superior vision, but in the skies, that ends up mattering for so little because dogfights are often settled by Who Blinks First.

Repossession 18
Dekker’s Venom practically toppled into the Hysteria’s ‘Mechbay. Its stiff leg groaned a protest, and Dekker could’ve sworn he heard something pop or sheer away. It was hardly material, the DropShip’s ancient fire-fighting system kicked in and sprayed the overheating Venom with flame-retardant foam.

“Get us out of here,” Dekker called, letting the battered ruin of his ‘Mech settle. The Venom’s engine protested, then went dead completely, switching the cockpit to emergency batteries. The damage diagnostic suggested his ‘Mech had been hit so hard the engine would need a total overhaul if there was to be any hope of it ever starting up again. A costly loss for the Aurigan directorate, but one the ’Mech-starved backwater would endure. The Marauders were too valuable as pirate hunters, and they had completed their objectives.

The Directorate just hadn’t counted on the Capellan Confederation. A sudden pressure kicked Dekker back against the Venom’s command couch as the Hysteria’s engines engaged and the little DropShip rose skyward. On a full emergency burn, the Leopard could pull up to three Gs of acceleration. He only hoped the Capellan ship was slower, or that they’d be so preoccupied asserting dominance over their new holding that they’d let the mercenaries go.

Dekker couldn’t relax even after the Hysteria left Hellespont’s atmosphere. Even if their DropShip was slower, it would have been trivially easy for the Capellans to intercept them with their heavy fighters. Only once half a day had passed with no contacts did the fear and paranoia start to ebb, only to be replaced by cold dread. How were they going to explain Alexandria’s loss to Victoria?

“Man, what’re we gonna do?” Glitch echoed his thoughts over dinner. “Think this’ll pull the boss out of retirement for a rescue op?”

Special Rules
- Marksman SPA: When a unit with the Marksman remains stationary and fires a single weapon that does 10 damage or less, a successful attack always results in an automatic Through-Armor Critical chance.
- Human TRO: A unit with the Human TRO SPA automatically identifies enemy units in Line of Sight, if their identities and capabilities would normally be hidden. Once per game, a Mechwarrior with the Human TRO SPA may specify a single weapon. An attack made with that weapon that successfully strikes an enemy target scores an automatic Through-Armor Critical chance.
- Combat Intuition: A unit with Combat Intuition automatically resolves all of its shooting attacks in the movement phase. Enemy units that do not also have Combat Intuition suffer the effects of these attacks immediately. A unit with Combat Intuition may voluntarily choose to delay their attack to the normal shooting phase.
- Melee Specialist: A unit with Melee Specialist applies a -1 bonus ToHit with all melee attacks.
- Fist Fire: A unit with fist fire receives a -1 bonus ToHit with all point-blank weapon attacks, and may include all arm-mounted weapons with the Melee tag during the attack.
- Sniper: A unit with the Sniper SPA reduces the ToHit penalty for medium range by 1, and the ToHit penalty for long range by 2.
- Crushing Extraction: Once per game, any player may call on Langton for extraction. The player calling to withdraw chooses a target hex for the Hysteria to land in. If a unit occupies the designated hex, it will be instantly destroyed when the Hysteria lands. Players may only extract from hexes adjacent to the Hysteria.

Political Vote 6

Hoban Cobb glanced up from his planned golf schedule as Nathaniel Smith tossed a report onto his desk. He picked up the tablet and thumbed through it, barely taking notice of the numbers. Percentages, happiness quotients, and other marketing nonsense poured right over him without leaving much of an impact.

“What’s this?” the executive demanded of his CMO.

Nathaniel smoothed his suit. “Reactions to the BattleComputer are trending into the negatives. Mechwarriors and technicians alike are having a hard time understanding why they need to devote so much tonnage to a system that, and I quote, ‘helps my ‘Mech walk better,’ when they could be devoting that tonnage to extra weapons and heat sinks.”

He leaned over, tapping a footnote that Cobb found indecipherable, and explained, “The Great Houses seem to be reserving new ‘Mechs to experienced veterans, and trusting older models for training. Most of the Great Houses see the expense of the BattleComputer as a waste.”

“Selling BattleComputers has been profitable,” Cobb protested with a petulant scowl.

“Be that as it may,” Nathaniel replied, “It may be time to bow to outside demands and save face. Besides,” the marketing wizard appended. “We can still sell the tracking computer as a one-ton upgrade.”

“I’ll think about it,” Cobb declared, darkly. “We can still sell the FasTrack System?”

**************************************************

“Get on with it,” Clinton Tarantino glowered at the Master Technician of the Fire Mandrills. Gabrielle was young for a civilian of such high standing, which was fortunate. Clinton did not have to fight off waves of revulsion the way he did whenever he was forced to interact with the chief merchant. Civilians viewed their advanced age as a sign of pride, but in Clinton’s eyes it just meant they were too stubborn to see when younger generations had displaced them.

Gabrielle bowed deferentially, “At once, saKhan.” She turned, and dramatically thrust an arm towards the Wulfen her technicians had been using as a testbed. At once the little ‘Mech hummed to life as the technician sitting in the cockpit brought the fusion engine up to power. Unlike the usual hiss Clinton usually associated with a ‘Mech’s cooling system engaging, the surface of the Wulfin was instead limned in faint but visible light as its laser-based Heat Sinks engaged.

“My f—predecessor proposed this to the scientists on more than one occasion. They thought this technology was wasteful. Idiots,” Gabrielle’s commentary was unnecessary, but it was a sentiment Clinton couldn’t help but agree with. The old scientist caste had always been too concerned with efficiency. She tapped her headset, transmitting her next words to the technician crew milling around near the ‘Mech’s cockpit. “Disable every third Heat Sink and push the engine output to near maximum, let us give the saKhan a show!”

All at once the glowing lines on the surface of the Wulfen sprang to life as the ‘Mech was pushed up to something close to the same heat load it would need to manage while walking or running. Glowing patterns appeared in the air as the laser heat sinks were focused into tiny lenses in the ‘Mech’s armor, effectively turning each one into a holoprojector. Clinton goggled as his name, rank, combat record, and history of his service to the Clan appeared hovering a scant few centimeters over the Wulfen’s left breast. A snarling Fire Mandrill sprang to life on the right, in colors nearly as vibrant as the real thing—colors no paint had ever really done justice to. Beneath it was a tally of Clinton’s combat kills, drawn in bloody slashes.

“I thought holotanks required a medium to function?” Despite himself, the saKhan of the Fire Mandrills realized he was having actual difficulty sounding unimpressed.

“Air is sufficient, that limitation easily overcome with the judicious application of more power,” Gabrielle explained. “In an airless environment, the surface of the ‘Mech can even be coated with an easily-manufactured aerogel that will release just enough inert gasses as it boils off into space to let the holo-sinks function at about half capacity for twelve hours or so. Those same gels enhance the effect in atmosphere, but are otherwise unnecessary.”

“And our warriors will be able to display—anything they desire? Personal heraldry? Artwork?”

“Even text,” Gabrielle appended, “That you might taunt your opponents, provided the lettering is kept reasonably large.”

“Well done, Gabrielle.” Clinton tried to begrudge the praise, but found once again his sentiment was heartfelt. “Outfit the Keshik with this technology, and we shall give the Khan a show.”

A) Inner Sphere General Vote
1) Phase out BattleComputers (No new ‘Mechs will have BattleComputers, gradual IS ‘Mech overhaul, IS ‘regular’ Mechwarrior skill becomes 3/4, unstable terrain becomes a thing again)
2) BattleComputers are fine as-is

B) IlKhanate General Vote (does not apply to Sea Fox, Snow Raven, Hell’s Horses, or Kerenskye)
1) Embrace Laser Heat Sink technology (Gradual Clan ‘Mech overhaul)
2) Chemical Heat Sinks are still the best
