DETROIT -- Trevor Rosenthal, once of the game’s top closers, will get a chance to rebuild his career with the Kansas City Royals.
The Royals selected Rosenthal’s contract on Wednesday, adding him to the 40-man roster. He had been in camp on a minor-league deal. Before spring training was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rosenthal struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter in five innings.
He had far less success in a brief look with the Tigers last summer. In nine innings of work, he struck out 12 but walked 11, showing his trademark fastball but with almost no control. He was released in August.
Still only 29, Rosenthal is best known for recording 121 saves in 328 games for the St. Louis Cardinals from 2012-2017. He signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals after missing all of 2018 after undergoing Tommy John surgery
