Unified Sports is an exciting inclusive program that brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities in a setting where all are challenged to improve their skills. Special Olympics in the NRV is lead by local volunteers in coordination with many community partners.

Dress appropriately for your sport because we will play the first date. (Athletic shoes, Volleyball and Basketball - court shoes and gym shorts. Swimming - swim suit and towel for the pool.  Bowling - socks are needed.)

Track and Field
Track and Field will begin on Sunday, March 10 - April 28, 2-4 p.m. Christiansburg High School track.  Track and Field Spring Games will be on Sunday, APRIL 21. Please check the Facebook pages (listed above) for cancellation of track practice due to weather.
Track and Field: SPRING GAMES
Track and Field Spring Games-April 21. Christiansburg High School. A great day for athletes to compete in track and field events. Volunteers are needed to plan and assist with the events.

Volunteer Positions needed

Escorts = lead the athletes from the event’s staging area to the start line, or from the finish line to the awards area.
Buddies = help one on one with an athlete to ensure that they arrive at their event’s staging area on time. Cheer them on, and make sure they have water and their provided lunch. This is an all day volunteer position, but is very rewarding.
Games management = assist with staging, time keeping, and other duties to run the track meet.
Unified Bocce
Bocce will begin on Sunday, Mar 10 - Apr 28,  2p-3:30p at Christiansburg High School Track. A fun sport suitable for any skill level and age. Please check the Facebook pages (listed above) for cancellation of practice due to weather.
Unified Softball 
Softball will begin on Tuesday, April 2 - June 4, 6:30p-8:30p at Harkrader Field, 1209 Buffalo Dr, Christiansburg, right behind Christiansburg Middle School. Players will be placed on teams of similar age and ability. Coaches and players/partners of all skill levels are welcome.
Swimming
Swimming is on Wednesday nights Feb 7 - April 24, 7p-8p, Blacksburg Aquatic Center on Patrick Henry Dr. This program partners individuals with intellectual disabilities with a partner for individualized instruction. You will be in the pool so wear your swim suit.  
Unified Bowling League
Bowling is on Thursday nights Feb 15-April 18, 6:30p-8p at the NRV Superbowl in Christiansburg. Shoes and ball rental $5/week and please wears socks. NO Bowling on March 7.

Unified Walking Club
Walking is on Monday nights, Jan 15-April 15, 6:30-7:30 pm  at the Uptown Christiansburg Mall.  All members of the Special Olympics community (coaches, partners, family members, volunteer groups and caregivers) are welcome to join! This activity is led by Coaches Matt and Jill Wheeler. Walk with a partner for fitness and fun! 
Unified Volleyball League
Volleyball is on Tuesday nights, Sept -Nov, 7p-8:30p at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. This league combines people with and without intellectual disability into teams of equal ability.  New volunteers must attend the volunteer orientation, dates and times TBD in the Fall of 2024.
Unified Basketball League
Basketball is on Tuesday nights, Nov-March, 7p-8:30p at the Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Dr. This league combines people with and without intellectual disability into teams of equal ability.  The league begins at the end of November-Dec & continues Jan - March.  New volunteers must attend the volunteer orientation, dates and times TBD in the Fall of 2024.
Jr. Basketball
Junior Basketball is for athletes ages 8-18 & is beginner friendly for our younger players, Jan.-Feb 10:30a-11:30a at Christiansburg Middle School.  The team will attend the SW Basketball Tournaments in Feb 2025

Alpine Skiing (Downhill)
This program partners individuals with disabilities with a partner/coach for individualized instruction. We have limited slots in this program. Volunteers should be competent on skis. The group typically skis at Wintergreen. 
Unified Cheerleading
Cheerleading is open to days and times. We are currently looking for qualified Cheer coaches. Please sign up if you are interested in coaching.
Running Group
Join the Unified running group. The goal of the group is to run/walk a 5K , 3K or a 1 mile. FOR MORE INFO email nrvspecialolympics@gmail.com. The group meets for approximately 1 hour on a weekday evening or a weekend day.   Dates TBD
Unified Flag Football
Unified Flag Football at the Virginia Tech Recreational Fields and/or Fieldhouse. Nov-Dec dates and times TBA.
