As an environmental technologist, your work will be dynamic, varied, and deeply meaningful. You may pursue a career that takes you outdoors to conduct critical monitoring, sampling, and surveying. You might work in a lab performing in-depth analyses, in an office compiling data and writing reports, or in a role combining all of these environments. Whether advising organizations on best practices or holding them accountable for poor ones, your contributions will help protect the health of our communities and the planet.
This fast-track program is designed for students who already hold a related post-secondary credential. Over two semesters, you’ll gain extensive hands-on experience and engage in project-based learning that prepares you for advanced roles in the environmental field. You will collect and analyze your own samples, spend approximately 40 per cent of your time in various lab environments, and work directly with advanced field instrumentation. During your labs, you’ll also have the opportunity to meet industry consultants and learn directly from environmental experts.
The Environmental Technology program emphasizes the chemical and biological sciences as they relate to environmental pollution. You will explore topics such as ground and surface water quality, soil and air monitoring, waste management, and recycling in both urban and industrial contexts. The program also examines environmental regulations and their social and economic impacts on communities.
Practical training is central to your learning, with a strong focus on the handling, analysis, and monitoring of a wide range of biological and chemical parameters linked to pollution. You’ll gain first-hand experience in areas such as analytical chemistry, data collection, environmental stewardship and management, instrumental analysis, and microbiology.
Environmental issues continue to evolve, and Durham College is committed to preparing graduates who are ready to lead and respond to the changing needs of our world.
