Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. the degree of Doctor of Laws or
  2. a Bachelor degree in Law as the main area of study, obtained with at least Second Class Honours or Category II or
  3. a degree from the University of Malta or any recognised overseas institution which the Board considers to be comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b).

The Board may consider also applicants in possession of a Bachelor degree in European Studies, Political Science, Economics or in any other area of study it deems appropriate, if the first cycle degree presented for admission is obtained with Second Class Honours or Category II.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. The objective of the course is to present a record of original work, or an ordered and critical evaluation of materials to the chosen area of research. Part of the course is devoted to a taught study-unit discussing legal research, analysis and writing. Through supervised research, you will become equipped with a sound understanding of your chosen topic, advanced research and writing skills. The aim is to encourage appreciation of the relevant rules of the international legal regime. The dissertation is intended to contribute to the subject, either through your original work or through the analytical exposition of existing knowledge. The Department specializes in the international law of the sea, maritime security law, international law on maritime search and rescue, international human rights law and international migration law and may accept to supervise research in these fields. Other areas may be considered subject to supervisor availability.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Master of Laws - LL.M. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Laws.

By successfully completing the Master of Laws course, you will:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to develop a research proposal and carry out independent research
  2. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of research skills and methods applicable to a particular field
  3. Have gained a mastery of the literature in the chosen topic of research
  4. Have gained the ability to critically analyse particular issues in contemporary international law
  5. Be capable of advancing their knowledge in their chosen area of focus and thus, be eligible to carry out doctoral research degrees
  6. Demonstrate an ability to present and defend the research.

As a holder of this degree, you will have gained a deep insight into a particular area of international law and will thus be considered as possessing specialised knowledge in the field. You will have demonstrated your ability to undertake in-depth, analytical research into an issue and will therefore be well-equipped to occupy a number of posts with international components including those in national administrations, international institutions and organisations, NGOs, diplomatic service and in the academic field.
