Thank you for your interest in the Capital District Writing Project's Young Writers Workshops! These workshops are designed for young people who LOVE to write and enjoy collaborating with other writers. Workshop facilitators are experienced K-12 educators from the Capital Region. Our facilitators challenge young people to grow as writers in fun and interactive ways and within a supportive community.

Each workshop will run July 13-17, 9am-12pm, virtually, using secure platforms. Find descriptions of the workshops, supports and materials needed, and the instructors below.

The registration deadline is June 29, 2020. Space is limited! If you are registering more than one child, please fill out a separate form for each child.

Workshop Descriptions

WRITING LIKE AN ARTIST (Ages 6-12)
Participants will explore picture books and the different forms of art, such as illustration and photography, that are used to help tell the stories. Taking inspiration from a variety of other materials, participants will play with different ways to tell their own stories.

Supports and Materials: a computing device (desktop/laptop/tablet), a notebook, a few old magazines, construction paper, pencils and pens, markers or colored pencils, glue or a glue stick. An adult should be on hand to help with any technical issues.

Instructors: Christl Mueller is a Literacy Specialist at School 2 in the Enlarged City School District of Troy. Her goal is for students to have exposure to different ways of telling personal stories. Chelsea Dyer currently teaches English grades 10-12 at Columbia High School in East Greenbush. Her major goal in teaching writing is to encourage students to tell their own stories with beautifully crafted language.

CREATE YOUR OWN WORLD (Ages 11-18)
What do The Hobbit, Harry Potter, and Minecraft have in common? They all involve fictionalized worlds with creative settings.
Young writers will create a model of their own unique world. They will then write a description of their world including characters, conflicts, and histories.

Supports and Materials: Writers will need access to a computer with Wi-Fi, a camera, and audio; a small notebook or journal for writing. There will be the option to create a world digitally, or using supplies on hand at home. Someone should be close by to help with any technical issues.

Instructors: Melinda Crowley loves teaching middle school English at O’Rourke Middle School in the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District. She is constantly looking for ways to foster a love of reading and writing with students and adults. Matthew Pinchinat is a History Teacher at Guilderland High School. The worlds of ancient Greece and Rome, Egypt and Mali, Mesopotamia and China, the Renaissance and our nation’s birth are what drew him in, and the neverending story of history is what keeps him there!

CREATIVE WRITING FOR THE COLLEGE ESSAY (Ages15-18)
This course will focus on a self-reflective writing approach that could serve as the basis for a powerful, personal college essay.

Supports and Materials: Writers will need access to a computer with Wi-Fi, a camera, and audio.

Instructors: Tim Jeffreys has taught high school and college-level English in MA and NYS. He currently teaches juniors at Niskayuna High School. Throughout his career, he has edited hundreds of college essays. Chris Reach has taught high school English for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake since 2008, and he currently teaches 10th grade honors students as well as juniors and seniors taking Journalism.
