Summary

Marianne Power was stuck in a rut. Then one day she wondered: could self-help books help her find the elusive perfect life?

She decided to test one book a month for a year, following their advice to the letter. What would happen if she followed the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People? Really felt The Power of Now? Could she unearth The Secret to making her dreams come true?

What begins as a clever experiment becomes an achingly poignant story. Because self-help can change your life - but not necessarily for the better....

Help Me! is an irresistibly funny and incredibly moving book about a wild and ultimately redemptive journey that will resonate with anyone who’s ever dreamed of finding happiness.

Perfect for readers who enjoyed Everything I know About Love by Dolly Alderton, Mad Girl by Bryony Gordon and Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig.

This audiobook also includes contributions from Marianne's mum, Mary.

May Save You Money & Time

Read by the Author, which I feel always adds to the emotion and heart of a book. It describes well the highs and more importantly, lows of going on a self help journey. I followed a similiar path about 10 years ago. By exploring the books/seminars mentioned and distilling the main points from them Marianne may save you lots of time and money. I to for a short time became a self help junkie and even travelled to Florida to do DWD with Tony Robbins, which cost thousands of pounds. I would recommend doing the event that Marianne did UPW, but don't get caught up in the moment and spend vast sums on further events like I did, its really not worth it. So much content is now available online and in great books like this one, without the need to attend events at all. Marianne is so brave and vunerable in this book, I take my hat off to her. Its a perfect start for anyone embarking on self help discovery. I wish it had been around 10 years ago, my journey would have been much shorter that's for sure.

Totally loved It!

What a fabulously honest book. Funny, actually hilarious with proper laugh out loud bits, reflective and informative with some totally cringey accounts of how self help can turn you neurotic if taken too seriously. I’m a huge Brene Brown fan too so it was wonderful to hear that she had such a positive influence when it comes to self belief. All round brilliant book, totally loved it!!

Good, bad, and indifferent

I'm generally wary of these "year of" memoirs, which have flooded the book market in the last few years. I've yet to find one that didn't feel gimmicky and insincere, and most of the time, I don't bother with them. But this looked interesting, so I gave it a go. First off, I think it was a mistake to allow the author to narrate the book. It usually is. A professional actress would have brought it far more to life; the author's voice is too flat and sad, which perhaps is appropriate for the tone of the book, but just left me feeling blah. I also didn't like the interjections in her mother's voice. But that's mainly because, as the book progressed, I felt angrier and angrier with the author's parents, particularly the mother. I have no idea if the author is aware of how much of her issues in every field that she tried to address were clearly coming from her upbringing, but it was unpleasantly apparent throughout. Underlined by the actual mother's voice in the narration. It seemed to me that a year of psychotherapy was what was needed, not a twelve month self help project.

Nevertheless, the book was well written, and held my attention. It did share the usual issue of these "year of" memoirs: twisting the results in a very predictable story arc, disaster at the start, a few twists and turns midway through, and a positive outcome at the end. This was slightly exaggerated by the fact that the year was broken down into separate projects for each month; this well worn story arc became much more obvious when it was repeated each month, regardless of the topic. I'm sure a lot of readers expect this, the rags to riches idea, but personally, it makes me distrust the story, and the reality of it all, when it seems that I'm being spun a tale, rather than participating in a real life story.

This all sounds negative, but actually, overall, I enjoyed the book.

Great idea and interesting story.

What a great idea this book was and a very interesting tale. I liked the honesty and openness of it. I wish in some ways that she had just stuck to books and not spent thousands on immersion retreats as that makes it less accessible to the reader and less clear in what actually helped (would she have achieved the same results and conclusions without the help of these retreats?). Seeing as she's had success with this book, and the success and fortune that brings, perhaps some of her more woo stuff worked after all. I found the speaking pace a little slow so had to listen at 1.25 speed but overall I thoroughly enjoyed. Definitely recommend!

Absolutely fantastic!

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book. For anyone who has spent years agonising over their ‘path’ and wondering why they ‘aren’t like everyone else’ will really relate and see the humour in it all. For those who are currently in this stage, you will draw great comfort in knowing you are not alone in your quest for answers to self acceptance and finding happiness within. Enjoy 😀

Depressing- until the last few chapters.

It wasn’t very funny or moving until the end!! When it became less depressing and I understand that was the idea but I didn’t want to pay to listen to someone else’s troubles. Good finish though.

Brilliant! Funny! Honest, Sad & Thought Provoking!

I think this is a superb book to both read and listen to as it is a true story and Marianne was so brave to write this . It is so refreshing and honest. It made me think about incidents in my life and highlighted some of the thoughts and fears we all harbour, but she has managed to convey an interesting, humourous and thought proviking real life story. Thank you

Disappointing

Started off with promise but steadily descended into what I can only describe as a “whine-fest” - noticed I had over 7hrs of the book left to listen to and decided that I didn’t want to waste anymore of my life listening to a story from which I was getting evermore disinterest in. My advice - don’t waste your time!

Tedious self absorption

The premise of this book was interesting, however as the book went on I became increasingly frustrated with the author. Marianne has a career she likes and is having success in, and her only problems appear to be debt which appears to be self inflicted and would be solved by actually doing some work, and a disastrous love life. Every time she has moments of self awareness, she seems to then immediately dive back into self pity and navel gazing.

I know self examination is the whole point of self help, but unfortunately I found the author and her problems completely unrelateable. I am a proponent of therapy and how self examination can help with emotional problems, but there also has to be an element of having some perspective on your own priveledge, something marianne seems to lack on all but the most shallow level.
